Topic: Bronzefill or Woodfill with the Davinci ?

Anyone tried printing Bronzefill or Woodfill filament with a Davinci ?
I'm guessing it would need a replacement extruder for this to be possible.

Re: Bronzefill or Woodfill with the Davinci ?

Those filaments are just material suspended in PLA, correct? I would assume you could reach the target temps with the stock extruder and with some hardware modificiations such as adding the appropriate amount of heat sinks to cool the extruder neck down. The cooler neck prevents the PLA from swelling before being extruded thus decreasing the likelihood of a jam.

Yeah, something like 80% PLA, apparently.
I suppose the stock extruder should be capable with some modding if people are getting PLA to work.

MakerGeeks carries some Metallic ABS. Not sure how it compares to PLA, but you can check it out here:

Wow, interesting. Haven't seen that before, thanks.
Just need to see if I can find some in the UK.

Re: Bronzefill or Woodfill with the Davinci ?

I tried wood in my old machine and ended up having to replace the hot end. The particles in the filament are not that controlled and there are some larger one. I was running a .3 nozzle at the time so a .4 like we have might be fine. But just to give you fair warning be careful and ready.

I came across this stuff while looking for metalic ABS .... http://gmass.turnermedtech.com/
Expensive but could be really usefull.

Woah??? $200 for 1Kg... I think I will pass, that's like half of what I spent on the printer.

Re: Bronzefill or Woodfill with the Davinci ?

It's certainly a good bit more expensive than plain ABS but think of the possibilties for parts that need to be harder wearing.

Re: Bronzefill or Woodfill with the Davinci ?

The Colorfabb Bronzefill isn't much cheaper, to be fair.
The website lists it at 50 euros for 750 grams.

Edit : Just noticed they do a sample pack containing XT, Bronzefill, Woodfill and Glowfill for 20 euros. Just need to see if I can get PLA to print first.

Looks like someone answered my original question on Thingiverse.
Someone commented on the PLA shroud thing that they managed to get Copperfill to print with no problems using the stock extruder.

Re: Bronzefill or Woodfill with the Davinci ?

TY - might try this, although a PITA modding for my Duo. Still, that Bronzefill looks pretty sweet. Please post if you print, success or fail.

Honestly at this point I'm kinda thinking it'd be simpler to build a Kossel Mini for exotics rather than trying to mod the Davinci to handle them.

Re: Bronzefill or Woodfill with the Davinci ?

Well, I finally got round to trying the Bronzefill.
It's a bit more brittle than normal ABS or PLA so feeding it into the hotend takes a bit of care.
I'm using 90C for the bed and 225C for the extruder. Same as I use for regular PLA.
I also find I need to use a layer fan otherwise the nozzle gets bunged up after a minute or two.
Here's my first attempt, not very exciting, just a basic coin shape. But it shows it can be done on the stock extruder.

The top finish isn't great and needs some tweaking but the bottom came out quite nice ....

And after some sanding and polishing with a Dremel ....

It's proving tough to print anything of any size though. It seems to like to stick to the outside of the nozzle and eventually clogs up.
I tried printing a chess piece but only managed about 70% of it and the side furthest from the fan was badly warped.
I'll keep tinkering though and see if I can hit on some better settings.

Re: Bronzefill or Woodfill with the Davinci ?

I just finished off an entire roll of copperfill, printing at the default 212/90c, had to use the fan shroud from thingiverse.

Re: Bronzefill or Woodfill with the Davinci ?

Yes, I think the fan shroud for layer cooling plus the right extruder temp is the key.
My 12v layer fan has a faulty connection and I've been using a 5v desk fan. With hindsight, if I'd repaired my 12v fan, I'm sure I would have had better results.
I did manage to print that chess piece but it's going to need a lot of tidying up as the layers on the far side drooped a bit. Not enough layer cooling.
I'm almost out of Bronzefill now so I'll try the Woodfill next.

@ teklegal, are you using the stock extruder ? Any chance you could post some pics of your prints ?

Re: Bronzefill or Woodfill with the Davinci ?

Just tried the Woodfill and it printed well first try !
It flowed much more evenly than Bronzefill and less gloopy, more like regular PLA.
The top of the model, where there's a slight overhang, came out a bit untidy but I'm sure that could be fixed easily with better layer cooling and maybe a slower print speed but I'm quite pleased with the results for a first attempt.
Printed with the bed at 90C, extruder at 210C and layer height of 0.3mm at 30mm/s ....

Another print with the Woodfill.
My wife makes jewellery so I thought I'd try making a box for a pair of earings.
It came out great but I'll need to buy some more to make the lid.

Re: Bronzefill or Woodfill with the Davinci ?

I think I've hit on a better setup for the Woodfill and PLA in general.
It's an easy mod to carry out too and seems to have improved the quality of the prints, plus I've had no filament jams at all since.
I also find I can now print slower. That would have caused a jam before.
Basically, I removed the metal extruder fan bracket and mounted the fan lower down, right over the extruder heatsink. It's now blowing directly across the heatsink and extruder barrel.
It's a bit of a sloppy mod at the moment, just a bit of putty holding the fan in place, but it shouldn't be too hard to knock up some kind of mount for the fan which can clip onto the back of the carriage.

Re: Bronzefill or Woodfill with the Davinci ?

Just a further update to the above, I've been having trouble with a fairly large print using Woodfill. The print is a rectangular box of 120 x 80mm and 10mm deep.
I couldn't get more than 35 minutes into the print without a jam, I think due to large travel distances involved.
I've now made a further mod to the extruder and just finished the print for the first time.
I added 4 very small heatsinks (9x8x6mm) to the metal block just above the nozzle which holds the extruder in place on the carriage.
I used thermal compound and also took off the stock heatsink and applied some to the back before putting it back on. I also spread some around the barrel which feeds through the metal block.
Finally, I moved the fan closer to the heatsinks but I think the key was the extra heatsinks and thermal compound.
I'm now able to print Woodfill, PLA, Bronzefill and Copperfill beautifully with this setup.
I can post some pics if anyone's interested but it's quite straight forward really. A pretty easy mod to carry out but very effective.

Edit : I've even managed to get Colorfabb XT to work with this mod ! smile
