Re: Filastruder Kit Gallery - Pictures of Filastruders in the wild!

I got the Filastruder and the Filawinder up and running at our local maker space in Mumbai India

Here's a link to an initial video :

Will add more photos later.

We had an initial hiccup when the auger jammed, and we had to dis-assemble it to remove all the caked plastic and fit it back again. In the near future, I plan to do a teflon coating on the auger. Hopefully, that will prevent jamming.

Re: Filastruder Kit Gallery - Pictures of Filastruders in the wild!

Should have made it wider for PLA. Perfect for ABS because it does not need much room to coil around its self, but PLA needs more. Have to use guides to compensate.

I also wish the sensor wires were longer so i could drop the thing lower. Is there such thing as longer wires ?
Maybe exact name i can look up on ebay somewhere ?
Thanks !

Here is the cable - https://www.sparkfun.com/products/10646
And the connectors- https://www.sparkfun.com/products/10651

I would send you a longer cable, but everything I have is already cut down.  I recommend getting extra connectors, I always manage to mangle a few.  You don't need any fancy crimping tools, I just mash them down with the flat of my caliper.  Pay special attention to the order of the colors in relation to the locking tab.  The connector is oriented the same way at each end of the cable so you don't have to keep track of which end is which- the connector goes on in the same direction no matter what.

Re: Filastruder Kit Gallery - Pictures of Filastruders in the wild!

Alternatively you could cut and splice the wires, that way you don't have to buy/crimp connectors.

Re: Filastruder Kit Gallery - Pictures of Filastruders in the wild!

Where can i find instructions for assembling my v1.3 filastruder ?

106

Re: Filastruder Kit Gallery - Pictures of Filastruders in the wild!

Sticky in this very forum entitled "Filastruder Documentation".

For that matter, how would you know it's a v1.3 withou finding that sticky? The only way to know is by serial number and the stickied topic.

EDIT: Just looked up your order, you definitely do not have a v1.3 Filastruder.

Re: Filastruder Kit Gallery - Pictures of Filastruders in the wild!

I'm thinking of getting into making my own source plastic and was wondering through the forum. It's great to see the personalization and ingenuity people come up for their machines. Very cool. Seems like great support for those who are working out their issues....also very cool.

Re: Filastruder Kit Gallery - Pictures of Filastruders in the wild!

Any luck getting horizontal oriented filastruder to extrude anything good ?
I could not find a way for filawinder to pickup filament so i gave up.
I assume for ABS it does not matter so much because its not as rigid as PLA when its cooled. PLA failed to coil using electric drill because of that, ABS was sorta manageable but would fail once in a while so i still needed a filawinder.

Re: Filastruder Kit Gallery - Pictures of Filastruders in the wild!

Hi Tim filastruder 1588 ready for testing three hrs to build
Filawinder all built so here is some photos during the first six hr test

How do I add a link for a short video

11/11/2015
Well its been eleven months now fifteen kg of abs and very pleased only had one problem where the winder program went haywire at the sensor but a reset sorted it.
New updated motor ordered as the original was a bit slow and I didn't like leaving it running at night so I am very pleased with the system
Thanks Tim.

Do new filastruders have an anti-stall addon to them? Is there a photo anywhere? can't seem to find one

Re: Filastruder Kit Gallery - Pictures of Filastruders in the wild!

It's been nearly a year, but after many modifications, here's our Ultra short loop (6cm) High Temperature (235°C) high speed filastruder and Filawinder modification. (S/N #1299, from 2014)

It's a bit different from the original filastruder and was modified many times so it looks a bit wierd.
We'll get down to making a proper looking one when this one wears out, if it does.

Re: Filastruder Kit Gallery - Pictures of Filastruders in the wild!

I got my Filastruder and Filawinder fully up and running today! Still have to get everything calibrated as far as temperatures go (for size) but soon I'll be making cheap 1.75mm filament.

Sorry, forgot to change it to hidden rather than private! Also, it's been running for the past 4.5 hours and has finished about a pound of pellets already! At this rate, it should do a kilo in 8-9 hours. Also, even though it's mounted vertically, the filament curve causes it to go from the nozzle to the copper ring which helps guide it through the Filawinder sensor. The Filawinder works flawlessly and the Filastruder is operating at 184 deg C to get ~1.78 +/- .04 mm. I did have to lower the sensor, but only by turning the box it's on on the side rather than the edge.

116

Re: Filastruder Kit Gallery - Pictures of Filastruders in the wild!

Beautiful!

Yeah, a kilo in 8-9 hours is about what I'd expect. I'm a bit conservative with the claims on the website. Fully insulating the barrel should also improve output rate a bit. That's still experimental, so I haven't implemented it on production kits yet. No bad effects observed by fully insulating so far, though.

You can also bump the temp up a bit to improve output speed. At 1.78mm, I'd guess you could add 10C without getting under 1.70mm average.

I give that temp bump a shot next kilo I run through for sure. What kind of insulation comes with the kit? I figure it works well so I might get a long length of it for the barrel. The trick with the ammeter to calibrate the stall board was perfect, I set it to 1.595 A and it runs at a nice constant speed without stalling. I would personally recommend that as the default method for anyone who has an ammeter rather than the 6-8 turns method because when I did 8 turns at first it was only at ~1.25 A.

118

Re: Filastruder Kit Gallery - Pictures of Filastruders in the wild!

Its fiberglass pipe insulation, just be sure whatever you pick up is rated for a fair margin over the temps you're running.

6-8 turns is conservative, as you learned. I wanted to err on the side of caution early on with the more powerful motors and stall protection, but I might bump it up to 8-10 turns and recommend confirmation with a multimeter as well. Your feedback is appreciated!

Re: Filastruder Kit Gallery - Pictures of Filastruders in the wild!

here's my set up. I made a steam punk style enclosure for my filastruder and mounted the winder next to it. I have a cut off valve in my funnel so I can load and mix then mount it in.Rather Pleased with it.http://soliforum.com/i/?mSw6SCn.jpg

#1632 reporting for duty, Christchurch, NZ.
Currently extruding a 50/50 mixture of ABS and HDPE, ie shredded milk bottles.
The temp is high for this pull. I will try lower later.
Very noisey, I will enclose the motor.

Re: Filastruder Kit Gallery - Pictures of Filastruders in the wild!

hopper and mount

The shredded HDPE is extruding at 2.5in /min, very slow. I'm sure that the issue is the granule size and shape.
The granules are not flowing fast enough down the tube. The shredded granules do not tumble like the ABS pellets.
I will have to shred to a smaller size. These granules are got to size by just reshredding many times (a dozen).

I have spent some time cutting the shredder tooth shape into some sheet metal to go from 6mm thickness down to
2mm. The granule size is very important, maybe not so if the extruder was of industrial size.

Re: Filastruder Kit Gallery - Pictures of Filastruders in the wild!

The motor will make an excellent shredder motor. I will design a detachable motor mount that will go on both.

Edit: No it will not,  10 x torque required. I have calculated I extert about 20 Nm torque for my manual shredding. At 20-25 Kgcm
stated elsewhere for a similar geared motor, that is 2 Nm torque.

Edit 2:  Well actually I was 20 time too large for torque. I extert 2x 3kg  => @ 16cm lever == 1 Nm
and whilst taking apart auger due to stopped flow (the plastic was solid up to feed portal- need to be careful of high temps then dropping them 10 to 20 C).  I exterted a torque similar to my shreading efforts, so it will try the motor in my shreading where you need to reshread over and over to get small granulate size.
