Topic: RC Planes/Helicopters/Cars/Multicopters anyone?

Since everyone has basically taken this general discussion section and used it to talk about 3D Printing (Oh my, how terrible! tongue), I figured I might try to drum up some chatter about some other hobbies of interest.

Anyone here into any RC stuff? Build anything cool? Dare I ask... use your solidoodle to make parts? tongue

As said in the state of soliforum - February topic, I am into Multirotor copters. Was doing a few promo shots for the website and some banners that I am going to put up at a tradeshow in March. Ill share them with you guys...

If anyone here is going to the Outdoor Adventure show in Vancouver for March 2nd and 3rd, Ill have a booth there and would love to meet you !

Love it, you have any of the footage from the camera?

Re: RC Planes/Helicopters/Cars/Multicopters anyone?

I was out doing some testing today but left the camera and footage at the office. Ill upload something tomorrow though!

Here's a poor quality photo I took with a smaller copter of mine down the valley I live in...

The full video. Not very exciting, you have been warned tongue

It is a stock DJI F550 with Naza controller.

The setup in the picture has a separate camera operator. If you want to do anything seriously you will need a separate camera operator, its just too difficult to get the right shot trying to control everything yourself.

And to keep things interesting... a crash video when we were first starting out...

I would love to fly that. I have a Raptor 90 and a Blade 450 I fly during the summer.

That's sweet. Are you pretty good with the whole 3D flying thing? Got any videos?

I am pretty comfortable at this point, got about 4 years of flying experience now.  I have made a few very expensive errors.  Practice(on a simulator) helps tremendously.  I just got the Raptor late last summer so I have not had a chance to get very aggressive with it yet.  Its rather intimidating to fly 60inches of blades 20 feet from your head.  I have some videos laying around here somewhere. Hopefully I can get my GoPro mounted to the Raptor when it gets warmer.

First test flight of RObot 2. Really delayed project as some of the funding and supplies struggled to come in on time or at all. Will be making its way into project section over the next few weeks. Most parts were printed on the SD or water jet aluminum.

Re: RC Planes/Helicopters/Cars/Multicopters anyone?

I was waiting to see an update on that project!

How did your funding go by the way?

I'm still a multirotor newb.

This thing is so stable I actually have time to take out my phone and take a picture of it while flying xD

I've been working on my own quad. The mock-up was done in balsa, now I'm working on the final acrylic version.

Re: RC Planes/Helicopters/Cars/Multicopters anyone?

I just bought a 9CH rc system Fly Sky TH9X with a batch of HXT900 servos.

I am planning to teach basic robotics to 12 yrs olds.
I am planning to print some parts with the correct measurements once I receive all my stuff.

Anyone else is into industrial robotics ?

Nice Kyle, what you using for FC board?

The F450 is using a naza board.

i've ordered a multiwii board for the new quad.

17

Re: RC Planes/Helicopters/Cars/Multicopters anyone?

Cool!, multiwii's arent too bad once you get the pid's set... I put a naze on my discovery it works great!

So I see a flight cam on there.. you on fpvlab also?

18

Re: RC Planes/Helicopters/Cars/Multicopters anyone?

Yeah, hopefully all the setup goes well, it's not exactly as plug 'n' play as the naza.

I'm trying to get used to FPV, right now i'm working on fighting the temptation to look at the quad lol.
I'm not on fpvlab but it looks like a cool site! I'll join tomorrow.

Re: RC Planes/Helicopters/Cars/Multicopters anyone?

Anybody try printing replacement rotors on a SD yet?
I tried printing the Whirly One rotor toy from Thingiverse but it did not print the pitched rotor too well.
I have a bunch of dual rotor RC Helis and the Eflite MCX rotor blade is small enough to fit on a SD2 table.
The pitch of the rotor looks like the overhang would be well below 45 degrees so would be difficult to print without supports.
Think a printed rotor in ABS would be safe enough to spin up?

I doubt it would be balanced. I'd like to see someone try though.

Re: RC Planes/Helicopters/Cars/Multicopters anyone?

Sweet multicopters! smile

I got a DJI Flamewheel 550 myself that im playing around with.
i'm new to the multicopter stuff, but i enjoy it alot.

I'm more of a FPV(First Person View) than LOS (Line of Sight).  So i've attached a camera on my F550 that i can see through my video goggles.

http://merko.name/i//jpncjg.jpg
http://merko.name/i//hmerms.jpg

Also got tilt-mode on my camera, that i can controll with my radio (too look up and down).

Also use GoPro Hero 3 Black Editon on my gimball to capture HD video, and i plan to buy another FPV camera that will have 10x optical zoom, so i will be able to switch between all 3 cameras with a button on my radio, and with a camera switcher i can look at all the cameras in my video goggles.

At the moment only using a 5000 mAh battery, but gonna upgrade it to a 11000 mAh one.

Here's my suitcase

It's a very fun hobby! smile
