Topic: The Warhammer 40,000 obsession gets worse... FINALLY FINISHED !
For the last few months, I've been having an obsession with Warhammer 40K models. As some of you may have already seen, I posted some printed models already. some of these models were extracted from games, the tweaked and embellished for printing.
BUt then I came across some models of the Imperial Knight Paladins, which look really awesome in game, unfortunately, all that "awesomeness" is courtesy of texture & bump maps, the geometry is pretty rudimentary.
So I started adding some details to the existing models, and for a while I though they looked pretty good, but them I bought an actual GamesWorkshop kit, and everything changed. The amount of detail they put into that kit is truly amazing.
The only problem with it, is that it's only articulated at the arms, and even that only to rotate the the weapons at the shoulder or elbow. I want a fully articulated model now.
So using the model kit as a starting point, I'm now working on modelling the Paladin in Solidworks. There are many problems with the GamesWorkshop, basically, the positioning, scale and interconnections would prevent the joints from having a full range of motion, so I had to work those problems out.
So far I have the legs worked out and they really work. They are hinged at the hip on a ball, so they can pivot in all the directions, the knee pivots in one direction (front to back), and the ankle can also pivot front to back and side to side. The pistons/shocks do move together with the shin and are limited to prevent binding.
Here are the original, textured 3D game model, along with the extracted geometry, and my attempt on putting back some of the missing details (the leg armor, shoulder pad, and chest). Click the images to get the full resolution version

So far I have about 30-40 hours into modelling the legs. I expect this project will take me about a month or so to complete. Once it's complete, I'll start printing the parts.
