Topic: The Warhammer 40,000 obsession gets worse... FINALLY FINISHED !

For the last few months, I've been having an obsession with Warhammer 40K models.  As some of you may have already seen, I posted some printed models already.  some of these models were extracted from games, the tweaked and embellished for printing.

BUt then I came across some models of the Imperial Knight Paladins, which look really awesome in game, unfortunately, all that "awesomeness" is courtesy of texture & bump maps, the geometry is pretty rudimentary.

So I started adding some details to the existing models, and for a while I though they looked pretty good, but them I bought an actual GamesWorkshop kit, and everything changed.  The amount of detail they put into that kit is truly amazing.

The only problem with it, is that it's only articulated at the arms, and even that only to rotate the the weapons at the shoulder or elbow.  I want a fully articulated model now.

So using the model kit as a starting point, I'm now working on modelling the Paladin in Solidworks.  There are many problems with the GamesWorkshop, basically, the positioning, scale and interconnections would prevent the joints from having a full range of motion, so I had to work those problems out.

So far I have the legs worked out and they really work.  They are hinged at the hip on a ball, so they can pivot in all the directions, the knee pivots in one direction (front to back), and the ankle can also pivot front to back and side to side.  The pistons/shocks do move together with the shin and are limited to prevent binding.

Here are the original, textured 3D game model, along with the extracted geometry, and my attempt on putting back some of the missing details (the leg armor, shoulder pad, and chest).  Click the images to get the full resolution version

And here is a photo of the leg from the model kit, and some Solidworks snapshots of the same leg.

So far I have about 30-40 hours into modelling the legs.  I expect this project will take me about a month or so to complete.  Once it's complete, I'll start printing the parts.

That is some impressive modeling!

How printable do you think the finished project will be?

4

Re: The Warhammer 40,000 obsession gets worse... FINALLY FINISHED !

Well,  I plan on printing it at a larger scale than the original kit, primarily because some of the hinges and moving parts would be too small and fragile otherwise.

I expect the final model to be 15-16 inches in height (the original kit is about 7.5" high). Also it's intended to be articulated,  so it will be printed in multiple parts.

Some of the ball joints were designed to be "popped" into the socket, other like the upper leg (thigh) which encloses the round ball joint for the hip, will have to be either printed in 2 halves, or printed with the ball joint captured in.  Other joints go together with a center pin, or pivot on a shaft.

In any case It will be printed on my Form Printer, so there are limitations in terms of size.  It will certainly be more like a traditional model kit than a typical, single piece 3D print.

I was looking at the snapshot above this morning, and it reminded me of ED209 (or what was left of it) in the original Robocop.

Re: The Warhammer 40,000 obsession gets worse... FINALLY FINISHED !

For the last few days (almost all of last week), I've been working on the side body panel below.  There was simply a huge amount of detail, the inner surfaces are mostly not in the same plane, rather they're staggered, and measuring and modelling this side panel was a real pain.

But it's finally done (well almost done, about 95%).

And a few more pieces added...  The main body now has 2 sides, bottom and back (no front yet).

Re: The Warhammer 40,000 obsession gets worse... FINALLY FINISHED !

Here is another update.

The front panel is done, and so is the head.  The top cover/cowling was one of the harder things I had to do in Solidworks.  Making smooth, compound  curves is not something I had to do before.

I had to come up to speed on lofts, 3d curves, swept cuts & extrusions and multiplane projections.  Oh what fun...

Re: The Warhammer 40,000 obsession gets worse... FINALLY FINISHED !

Added Thermal Cannon and basic shoulder pad.

The shoulder pads were something I was dreading and putting off, because of their compound curves and asymmetrical profiles.  But It turned out the solution was very simple after all, draw the 2 profiles of the end edges, then draw the cross section profile as a guide.  The Loft function did the rest.  It came out very nice.

I really didn't like the one armed look so I gave him the Reaper Chainsword.  It's still missing a few details, but it makes the mech look balanced.

Other than this, he's "ready for his close up, Mr. DeMille...".

FINALLY FINISHED !

After nearly 2 months of work, the Imperial knight model is finally done.  There are a couple of small hoses that are not modeled simply because they will be made of actual flexible rubber, rather than hard plastic, but other than that, it's done.

Next up... printing the beast.

http://www.soliforum.com/misc.php?action=pun_attachment&item=10268

I though it would look cool to add some decals, to give it the final look.  Whether this is going to be the actual color scheme of the printed model, remains to be determined.

And the rotation video:

Re: The Warhammer 40,000 obsession gets worse... FINALLY FINISHED !

That is so impressive.  A person could have a whole hobby machining the parts out of metal to construct the mech.  I don't think a 3D printer could do it justice.

SLa printer will do the job... a nightmare for filament printer..

Re: The Warhammer 40,000 obsession gets worse... FINALLY FINISHED !

So I already started printing the model, I have the legs, pelvis, head, helmet, chest armor & crotch banner.

Originally I wanted to print the the upper leg and hip joint as one piece, but the gap was just too small and it fused the 2 pieces together.  I then started to increase the gap, by reducing the size of the ball.  By the time the gap was big enough to prevent fusing, it was pretty nasty, and the surfaces left a lot to be desired.

So I gave that up and split the upper leg into 2 halves and then glued them together with the hip ball joint inside.

Anyway, here is a quick sampling of the output.  It pivots at the hip, knee and ankle.

I did some light sanding at the seam between the 2 halves.  There is still a visible seam in the inset areas, but they will end up being covered by the knee and thigh armor, so I won't bother to clean that area.

I applied a light coat of flat black to accentuate the details

Re: The Warhammer 40,000 obsession gets worse... FINALLY FINISHED !

It's been a long time since I posted any updates.  During this time I had some problems with my Form 1+ printer, but all that was sorted out eventually.

All the parts have been printed (some many times over), but everything is ready for painting.  Here are a couple of shots.  The standalone shot is the older one.  The 3 view shot is newer.  Some of the parts are reprints (the legs and pelvis).

Everything will be primed with flat black paint, the primary color will be dark red instead of green, and some (not all) of the trim will be gold instead of silver.

Re: The Warhammer 40,000 obsession gets worse... FINALLY FINISHED !

One of the problems I encountered with this model, is that it's so top heavy, that the joints can't support it.

The joints are not stiff enough, and the friction between the moving parts is not high enough to keep the model upright in most positions, and even when I manage to set him up standing straight (like during the photo shoot above), all it takes is a little bump for him to fall.

The hip ball joints specifically were a problem, and to a lesser extent the knees.  I could have put something between the parts, but then it becomes too stiff to move, so for the hip joints I drilled a hole in the leg (circled area), and used a grub screw to apply the pressure on the ball.  basically I can position the legs like I want them, then tighten the screw to hold the position.

Here is the model set in a bent knee position that would not have held up before, now it does perfectly.  BTW, the screw holes will not be visible, as they are behind the armor plate that goes in that slot.  The armor is pressed in place, not glued, so if I want to change the pose, all I need to do is remove the armor piece, loosen the grub screw, reset & retighten.
