Topic: Any idea how to fix a PSU?

So I have this common PSU:

and I opened it up to switch out a burned out fan.  After putting it back together, it is just completely dead.  Not even a power light when I plug it into the outlet.  Of course it was unplugged while I was messing with it and literally the only thing I touched was the fan so I can't imagine how I broke it.  Maybe there was something that kills it when opened but I don't see anything like that.  The fuse looks good as far as I can see.  I'm stumped.   Any suggestions on what to check or how to fix it? 

Yes, its cheap and I'll just get a new one but kinda wanted to print with it today.  And just when I was about to get that mini kossel running again...

Did you take it complete apart to replace the fan (remove PCB from frame) or did you just cut the wires on the fan?  Is the voltage selector in the correct spot?

It has a plug inside so I just disconnected that and crimped and heat shrinked the new fan onto those wires.  Voltage selector is correct.

Does it start up if you put the dead fan back in? My supernight's fan sounds like it may be on the verge of failure as well sad it rattles quite a bit.

This might not be helpful, but when my stock Solidoodle 4 PSU's fan got damaged (didn't rotate freely), I bought a replacement fan, replaced it, and since it was held in place with either thermal compound or silicone and I didn't have that at hand, I used wood superglue to secure it in place, and it refused to turn on after that.

Well, my fan wasn't actually completely dead but it just sounded so horrible when it was moving and I had a spare laying around, I just decided to go for it.  I'm not sure it really worth trying to put the dead fan back in since I already cut the harness and attached the good one.  I would think the PSU would still work without any fan on it, but I'm not even getting an indicator light anymore.  And interestingly, the thermostat on this one never worked and the fan just constantly ran.  Maybe thats why it died after only about 8 months.

The fuse looks good as far as I can see.


test the fuse with a ohm meter .
beyond that  test the diodes and MOSFETS.
For less than 25$ for a replacement order another one.  If you want to learn to reair it you can but from an econic point of view not likely worth messing with.
If you really want to fix it try googling switching power supplies.
I am sure there is a site that will tell you how.

Ya, I'm not familiar with anything more complex than a fuse and it looks like a solder in fuse instead of a drop in replacement anyway.  Not worth it to repair, will order new one.  I was hoping there might be some kind of internal reset that I missed or something but looks like not.  Thanks.
