Topic: E3D v6 ?

First off I apologize if this has been spoken about already, did a search but couldn't find specifics.  I finally killed my hot end with some pla (Godzilla clog!).     Tried to separate the nozzle from the brass screw pipe and it shattered.  so my questions are 1 - are the instructions on the soliwiki for e3d installation the same for v5 as they are for a v6 head?  Question 2 is can I buy a new assembly from someone here?  Question 3 is how hard is this to install start to finish?  the mechanical aspects of it, from what I've read, don't worry me too much. It's just the software portion that worries me.    I just feel like its a bit over my head (i hate firmware and manual software upgrades).   Again guys thank you in advance, your always help full and I always appreciate it.

Re: E3D v6 ?

1) The v6 has subtle changes, but none that would confuse anyone going by the wiki. Essentially the same, shorter, and thermistor placement and method securing have been changed for better readings and easier upkeep.
2) Since the v6 is so new, I doubt anyone has one just lying around that would be willing to part with one. However, I have a v5 collecting dust, never used.
3)Mechanically speaking, it is very simple. The v5 can be irritating wrapping the kapton, but nothing a little patience and calm steady breathing at worst. smile v6 seems to be a little more straight forward, faster to assemble, bit easier.
Firmware side of things will depend on your working knowledge and skill level. If you are like me (less than zero on a 1-10 scale), it may give you some issues. But the firmware update process really depends on which board you have.

Don't be worried! It isn't nearly as bad as you may think. Just be certain you have read the wiki many times, and even walk through it as you are assembling for the first time.

Re: E3D v6 ?

I think Azerate would be willing to print those parts - I would but my printer is running Filastruder hoppers.

Let me know if you have E3D questions!

Re: E3D v6 ?

Thank you guys you saved me.

On a side note, I just thought of something.  In the e3d v6 videos it says they have a .25 mm nozzle.   If you have a good cooling fan .......   how small do you think you could print?   Lego gun small you think?     (  if you cant tell I really need to print small... lol)

Re: E3D v6 ?

Also whats a boden feed?   Im guessing the sd's are direct feed?   Is one better or is it just preference?

Re: E3D v6 ?

You will want a direct feed. And you are correct that SD is a direct.
Bowden moves the motor to another location then feeds it through a tube into the hotend. That would also require a different setup for your extruder and possibly carriages. Though it is possible and has been done.

Talk to LdyMox on smaller than small prints. She's had some good results with her tinkerings. But the key to any good result will always be calibration, calibration, calibration smile

Re: E3D v6 ?

Yes, the doodle's are direct feed (the stepper motor sits over the hot end and forces the filament down). A bowden feed supplies the filament to the hot end from an outside location. Meaning the stepper motor is not located directly above the hot end. I just ordered the E3D v5 Bowden and assembled my airtripper bowden extruder. The idea with the bowden is to reduce the weight that sits on the axis.
