Topic: Weird mid-layer extruder shift?

As shown in the pictures I've attached, my SD3 has recently started having a weird axial shift in the middle of a layer.  It can be x,y, or both axes, but I'm not having any trouble with z (knock on wood).  Any idea what's going on here?

An addendum: The extruder isn't getting caught on anything.  It'll just stop mid-layer and shift in the positive y-direction (most of the time).

Re: Weird mid-layer extruder shift?

Start by cooling the logic board.  Most of the time this is an issue with the stepper drivers getting too hot.  You can add miniature heatsinks to the steppers, or you can add a fan to cool the electronics.

To verify this is the problem, just get a desktop fan and put it behind the printer pointing to the electronics.

Does this solve the problem?  Then print one of the many fan holders here and on Thingiverse, for a permanent fan installation.

To print or, 3D print, that is the question...

Have you added any lubrication to the rods for the X or Y axis?

Thanks, I'll try these suggestions and keep everyone updated.

Ok, so I added lubrication to both axes and that didn't help.  Neither did cooling the electronics.  Any other ideas?

If you have ensured that the generated G-code isn't showing that path then you might adjust the VREF's.  I put it that way because this just doesn't look like normal stepper skipping to me.  Sometimes it is difficult to tell from a picture with out putting it into context (.stl) so we know what it is supposed to look like.
