Topic: pulley wobble from wear

My SD 3 started to make weird noises when making fast long Y and X movements . I determined it was my X and Y pulleys chattering . So I took them apart to grease them and re installed them .Then I noticed they wobbled a lot on the 5mm bolts which also showed signs of wear, black had worn off on one side. I using my drill press drilled the ends out about 2. 5 mm deep and inserted
(2)  5 x 8 x 2.5 mm ball bearings re assembled pulleys and no more noise no more vibration and oh so smooth . I have ordered some bearings for the rear shaft to replace the bushings next . I will post results when I get them in. I have also installed Lawsy's carriages with bearings, next is his extruder mod.

That's a neat idea, excellent work! Did you bore those out on a lathe or just in the drill press?
The aluminium bore of the pulleys really isn't a great bearing surface, and with the tendency to tighten up the y-belts to reduce backlash, they probably do wear out a fair bit. Other solutions have added bearings to the idler bracket such that the bolt and pulley rotate together - but this seems simple and tidy!

Hi Grob     At 1st I tried one of the fixes with the bearings in the mount and the shaft and pulley turning together but tightening the set screw made it rotate eccentrically due to the wear in the pulley. So using my drill press and a 5/16 in drill bit  ( measures 7.98 mm) made a nice snug fit .
The pulleys now turn nice and smooth and true no binding or wobble at all the bearings only cost $10 from E bay for 10 of them So I have 4 spares . It only took about 1/2 hour to do all 3 pulleys . Less time than it took to print the mounts . Bearings were 5 x 8 x 2.5 mm . Hope you try it and have as easy a time as I did .   Let me know       Bill D.
