Topic: Please help - Nozzle is jamming into filament

Hello Everyone,

I've been working with my SD2 for about a month now. At first it was printing pretty well with some minor adjustments in Slic3r, however now I having some issues that are beyond my knowing. I'm hoping someone here can point me in the right direction.

During my print the first layer lays down nicely however on the third layer and above everything starts to go bad. You will see in the pic I'm printing something fairly simple () and what starts to happen is the nozzle starts jamming into the filament almost as if the z-axis is not moving, however the z-axis is moving. Is this an issue with the G-Code or within my slic3r settings? I tried adjusting a few parameters in slic3r back to default however I'm still having the issue.

I'm using Sli3r v9.9. I also attached pic of my settings. Thank you for your time and review,

If you haven't changed the steps/mm of the extruder,  then the extrusion multiplier should be closer to .7  The problem is that you are extruding too much plastic.

Hello Everyone so I figured out my issue. I was definitely over extruding and my Flow rate was off. I found this weird because I was printing fine before then this past week all started going bad. Anyway, all is good.

I do have one question after performing the calibrations, and then test printing I seen that some corners seem to extrude out. I feel that this is done because the x and y axis stop to hard thus pushing some of the filament. I attached a pic. Maybe someone can shed some light on this.

That's just the bottom layer or so? The squish is just the layer height not matching the actual height between nozzle and bed (tends to be a bit rough in the first layer, especially if you're squeezing it down intentionally).

Corners often stick out like that all the way through - the nozzle comes to a halt at each corner to change direction. The extruder has a bit of lag, and tends to keep extruding a touch just relieving internal pressure even when the extruder motor stops, meaning even at this zero-velocity corner, the extrusion rate is pretty much smooth through the corner - which creates more plastic than demanded at the corner, and hence a blob. The effect can be reduced by reducing the outer perimeter speed, but is of course will slow down the whole print!

A more accurate/responsive hot end will give more accurate corners - something with a smaller ID all the way through, smaller melt zone, etc. People here like the E3D hot end kit for these kind of reasons.

Also looks like the corners of that print have warped up - you may need to improve the sticking of the part to the bed: is your bed temp (assuming ABS here) at least 95C? Have you tried enclosing the printer? What kind of surface are you printing onto (Kapton? is it super-clean?).

Hello everyone,

Thx for the info. The bed is heated the warping/lifting of the corner was because the I cut a piece of kapton tap off by mistake when I was scoring the surface. There's an area on my bed that's exposed however that issue is fixed. I also wasn't worried about the lifting because I knew what that issue was. I just wanted to quickly print to test out a new extrusion/flow rate.

I will look into the E3D hot end. Thank you for bring that up. I kind of figured the corners of the print was do to the extruding stopping so quickly and changing directions. Thank you for verifying that. Ian, thank you for the verification as well. My flow rate was way off I had it at 93. I found it weird though that the default us one. I would think the software designers would at least know that a flow rate or I should say multiplier of 1 is way to high. Anyhow the pics I showed of the green box was done with a multiplier of 83. Ian states that it should be close to .7....I will try that and give an update.
