Topic: Looking for a better X-axis motor!!!

Does anybody know where to buy a better NEMA-14 for the X-axis?  The WIKI just links to a sight that doesn't have any way to purchase one.  So I figure as long as I am going to have to replace it I might as well try and find a better unit.

Better how?

Re: Looking for a better X-axis motor!!!

That's kind of what I was hoping to figure out.  Mine is failing and although I use my printer a lot I would think there would be something out there that would last over a year.  So I would like to find something that is the same dimensions and has slightly more torque.  So far my searches for even the same thing have turned up empty.  That is unless I want to go to SD and wait forever for a $19 motor.  You have any recommendations?

Re: Looking for a better X-axis motor!!!

How's yours failing? 2000 hours on mine.

Re: Looking for a better X-axis motor!!!

Wish I knew the answer to that.  I'm guessing it doesn't appreciate the extra mass of the bulldogXL.  Either way I am going to have to replace it hopefully with a higher quality unit.

Well I mean what are the symptoms? Bearing failure?

Re: Looking for a better X-axis motor!!!

It started making an unusual noise intermittently last night. Then it started skipping steps so I thought stepper driver.  Adjusted VREF and made sure everything was running cool(fan on drivers and motor).  All was fine and I still had the same problem so I replaced the driver hoping that was it.  This all led me to the conclusion that it has to be the motor.  Of course I could be wrong and I usually am smile

Stock Solidoodle:

Some alternatives:

The stock solidoodle motor is actually pretty decent in terms of torque output, if those specs are accurate. I'm not sure you can get much more torque without going to a double stack or a NEMA 17.

Re: Looking for a better X-axis motor!!!

Where could I find a double stack that has the same mounting dimensions?  As busy as my printer has been I am planning on ordering up spares anyway so I can try a few different motors.  I'll use them for something.

Do you have any experience with any of these?

Re: Looking for a better X-axis motor!!!

The pololu one is exactly the same thing, just rebadged, so yeah I have experience with it. Its been on my SD for a year. Too bad they are out of stock for a couple of weeks.

I cannot say anything about Robotdigg motors. Everything else I have bought from Derek has been really good though. Mostly belts, bearings, pulleys, and electronics. But since I never bought the motor, I cannot honestly say.

People on reprap forums seem to favor getting stuff from aliexpress. I personally never have.

Re: Looking for a better X-axis motor!!!

Hijacking this thread to see if anyone knows where I can get a new Y-motor?  I stripped the threads in the process of making sure it was secured tight enough to the frame.  The issue is that solidoodle doesn't really provide any info on it because of course they want you to get it from them for 3x the cost.  Is it NEMA 14?  How many step per rev am I looking for?  It seems like most places really only sell them with the threads on the top, when I need to threads on the bottom.  I couldn't find it on any of the sites linked here.

I also need the screws for it, which are M3.  I can order these from McMaster-Car.  If I could find something bigger, I am okay with taking my dremel to the frame to make the holes bigger and making the attachment a little stronger.

Re: Looking for a better X-axis motor!!!

There are threads on here that list the specs and any other pertinent info... I don't have them bookmarked but a search should turn them up.

since you are ok with making the holes bigger just tap them out to a m4 or 5 and put in bigger screws... easy and cheap fix just make sure to keep the filings out of the inside of the stepper.

I was actually referring to the holes in the side of the case, I could comfortably enlarge those with my dremel.  I don't have a thread reamer, I guess I could get one and find some scrap metal to practice on before I take it to the motor.  I've never used one before but I guess I can figure it out and if I damage the motor them I'm still in the same spot I'm in now.

Re: Looking for a better X-axis motor!!!

Thanks.  Dead link to smart automation and I can't seem to get there on my own.  Anyone got a link?  I would really like to find a US supplier, if I save a few bucks by ordering from China its not worth it if it takes 3 weeks.

You should be able to find a cheap metric thread tap at the hardware store for a few bucks.  Just buy one for the next size bigger than the stripped hole.  Buy for bolts the new size and don't forget something to turn the new tap.  Aluminum is easy to tap if you take it slow.  You may need to drill the holes in the motor ever so slightly larger and maybe you won't.   Ask what drill size is used for the tap you bought.  The trick is (once you get it started) screw in only until it feels like it is going to stop and then back out about 1/2 turn.  Then go back in and repeat each time it will screw in slightly more until you have the new threads the depth you want.  The other option is go buy 4 self tapping machine screws the length you need that are slightly larger than the stripped holes in the motor.  This may mean that you don't end up with metric threads.  Bring your caliper to the store with you and buy several different sizes or bring you motor with you.  There is no reason to replace your motor just because the screws are stripped.  Other than the trip to the hardware store this shouldn't take more than a few minutes to fix.

So which motor did you choose for X axis??
Mine seems dying also.

So I just received my pololu motor and although it specs the same it is not just a re-badge of the Stock SD X-axis motor.  I have yet to get it installed but the main difference is the shaft  has a flat in it and it is all black.  I will update once I get it installed.

Doest it make any installation problems because of shaft? So can you recommend me this motor?

I don't see any problems with it.  I have not installed it yet I'll try and get to it today and let you know.
