Topic: filament wrapping around extruder gear

Anyone have any suggestions for keeping the filament from wrapping around the extruder gear?  I have a Solidoodle 2, resistor heated bed.  I'm running Taulman T-Glase.  I have the case off the printer and I'm running the filament down from above.  I made a simple spool holder out of makerbeam with two bearings to hold the taulman spindle.

First off, Slow down to under 30mms for everything besides non print moves. This stuff will not print fast. I stress again... Slow down!!!!!

Second, Check diameter of the filament. I had a bad roll and it was jamming in the barrel. A few larger spots in the spool.

If it keeps happening email Taulman. They have wonderful costumer support. Explain you problem, he may know something I don't. They are very helpful.

I hope I understood the question right.

When I get home from work today I'll try slowing the print down.  I was following someone's settings on the kisslicer forum for a solidoodle 3.  Looking at their settings I think they were well over 30mm/s.  On the upside though t-glase sticks amazingly well to bare glass for me.  To get the failed print off I just put the glass under some cold water and the part just let go.  If I can get the speed dialed in right I think I'll stop printing with  ABS except for some of the special glow in the dark and conductive types.

I have not used kissslicer yet.

I know if I run over 30-35 mm/s My extruder starts skipping and goes click click...... and then the stringing spaghetti mess happens around the extruder gear area.

After slowing down I have been problem free ever since.

Good luck! Let me know how it works!

P.S. they have 3 colored versions of T-glase out on the Taulman website.

Yeah I saw the colors, I definately want to get some.  I wish they had an orange or yellow color too.

I have some on the way, I bug them quite a bit with questions. I'll ask what other colors they are going to come out with.

Re: filament wrapping around extruder gear

Ok, I ran it with much slower speeds 20mm/s on everything except travel and I'm still getting kinks.  I did notice this time though that right as the print starts my hot end temp drops down to 185 or so then starts heating back up 190.  It's when the temp drops below 190 that the problems happen.  So I think that's the real core of the problem.  Something in the gcode or printer itself is causing the temp to drop below the flow temp for the t-glase and it's pushing back.  So I guess I need to know what settings in repeiter or kisslicer to change to force it to keep at least 190.

Try doing the PID Tuning. You hotend should sit at 190 +-.1 degrees.

SD3 w/ mods:
Glass bed with QU-BD heat pad upgrade, threadless ballscrew w/ 8mm smooth rod, spectra line belt replacement, lawsy MK5 extruder, Lawsy replacement carriage, E3D hotend, Ramps 1.4 w/ reprap discount controller, DRV8825 drivers, 12v 30A PS, Acrylic case, Overkill Y-idlers, Filament alarm, Extruder fan + more.

Ok, I ran through the PID Tuning a few minutes ago and started a new print.  It's cold here today so I put the cover back on.  When I last left the printer it seemed to be holding to 195 better so we'll see when it gets done.  Also Stevos, definately ask them about Yellow.  Having all the primary colors would be awesome.

Will do!

Re: filament wrapping around extruder gear

Well, earlier today I got another kink going into the hot end with temps that had been working.  Then I noticed a black ooze coming out of the peek barrel.  So I think I probably had a partial clog that was just getting worse and worse.  I've decided as an early Christmas present to myself to get an e3d hot end.  Does anyone know if I can run it with the 150 watt supply from solidoodle?

The general consensus is no, the stock p/s ratings are a bit lacking...not saying it won't work but... here is a link to get you started ---> http://www.soliwiki.com/E3D_extruder

I ran mine with the stock power supply for a few months. You should be fine for a while.

Stevos,

Did you use the original Solidoodle thermsistor and heater or the new e3d ones when you set up your e3d?

No. It comes with its own setup.
