Topic: adding lots and lots of fans?

On thingiverse I see electronics covers with dual 40mm fans, I see push-on fan mounts for adding fans to both X and Y motors, then there is the existing fan on the extruder motor.

Two questions:

Do people just keep splitting the existing fan connection for all this? Is there some point where the printrboard will run out of juice for the fans?

How important are all these fans? Are any of them likely to make print quality better?

Re: adding lots and lots of fans?

I used a separate 12V power supply for mine.   I don't know if the printrboard is better about having enough power, but the Sanguinololu isn't..

Fans on the circuit board prevent overheating of stepper motor drivers causing skips.

Fans on the extruder can serve many purposes.  One of the most popular is a fan pointing at the print so the filament cools and hardens soon after setting.  Good for higher quality prints, printing in PLA, and some other situations.

Re: adding lots and lots of fans?

I have a RAMPS controller but my power supply has three outputs/rails. Two go to the two RAMPS inputs, and the third goes to a separate small PCB where I've soldered on the plugs for all of the extra fans I've added.

This is neat and makes it easy to unplug just one temporarily for maintenance.
