Topic: Minimum PC specs to run solidoodle

Hi,
I'm still waiting for my SD2 Pro Model to arrive and been researching on how to make the printer a standalone system. I know that solidoodle needs to be tethered to a laptop or pc while printing. There's alot of options out there in forums (panelou sd card, raspberry pi, etc.)
But it's all some serious hacks and mods which I'm not good at. So, I'm thinking of getting this very cheap $50 2nd hand netbook to make as a dedicated computer for the Solidoodle 2.
What is the minimum specs to run the solidoodle 2? Will this work?
Kohjinsha Netbook
Microsoft® Windows XP Home Edition
Processor by AMD PCS 498 MHz,
504 MB of RAM
USB 2.0 port x 2
Bluetooth Ver,2.0+EDR
Wireless LAN: IEEE802.11 b/g
7" Wide TFT Color LCD (LED Back light) with Touch Screen
Resolution (standard display) WVGA (1024×600)

I'm also thinking this netbook is a small  foldable touchscreen so I can mount it nicely on my SD2 and just use the touchscreen while the keyboard is folded at the back.

Also, does a netbook consumes less power than a normal laptop/pc?

Re: Minimum PC specs to run solidoodle

It depends what you want to do with it: if you just want to control the printer, no problem. If you would like to slice, then you need something much faster than that. Be aware that with such a small screen you will need some dedicated host software.

I think in principle you can use the same software available for the PengPod: check these other two threads:

and

The power consumption is much lower than a normal PC, and also lower than a laptop, generally speaking.

My main purpose for this device is only to control the printer (my alternative to panelolu and raspberry pi) but I will definitely use my powerful laptop for the slicing. I'll check the threads that you shared.
I just hope this netbook can survive a 20hour printing.

The printer itself can be controlled via a decent ARM tablet. I believe there is an affordable Chinese model that our forum members enjoy.

I've seen the pengpod setup but I'm learning more info about the raspberry pi and is more interested in using it because it consumes less electricity than a laptop or Tablet and cheaper too.
Is the R.Pi model B also a good alternative to control the printer?

Re: Minimum PC specs to run solidoodle

You have no screen, as standard, which is the advantage of the Pengpod.
The Allwinner A10 SoC its based on also runs about 2x the clock speed - so its notably faster. Its blitzes a Pi in side-by-side benchmarks.

If your intention is to use it headless, and connect via VNC from a real computer or use some other network based visualisation - then yes, the Pi is an acceptable alternative.

If however you want standalone printing in the sense of printing with no further peripherals - then the Pengpod is the superior choice due to its better specs and inclusion of a touch screen

I don't know yet how to do the vnc or ssh to connect to ras.pi but that's what I'm planning to do.

Re: Minimum PC specs to run solidoodle

If you want to use that I would tear windows off and put Linux on.  I am running my 10+ year old computer with an AMD 2800 and 1 gig of RAM and it works alright, but I had to kill a bunch of stuff in windows to keep it from doing anything else.  I am slicing with it and the times are reasonable but the processor is a lot better than yours.  At some point I might put Linux on it, but for now it works.

Yes I think replacing it with linux would be better.
But after some research on this forum  I've already decided to go with the raspi smile I already ordered the model B. And it's cheaper than the 2nd hand netbook I mentioned on my first post.

Make sure and show us pictures of what you create. By the way - posts about adding things like Rasberry pis to the Solidoodle should most likely go in hacks and mods.

Sure I'll definitely show my setup. I'll create a new topic on hacks & mods.
