From what I've heard, it's pretty hard to get at the insides without hurting the printer. They sell a lot of on site repairs, so it makes sense for the printer to be hard to get at yourself.

Well, anything you do to the head causes it to need to be recalibrated. However, the software loaded on the printer makes recalibrating the print head fairly simple.

The main differences between the Dimension and the solidoodle are:

1) Larger build area (10" x 10" x 12")

2) Heated build area rather than heated bed

3) Removable build platform

4) Dual extruder

5) network printing

6) On board control (like the panelolu)

5) Sensors, sensors, and more sensors (Anything you can thing to monitor, you'll find a sensor recording it)

You know, a lot of this (Sensors) could be added to the Solidoodle with an additinal SBC, such as an arduino Due.  Would this extra addition of sensors be worth the effort or the cost of development?  Does it serve a purpose other than wow factor?  Since I still have ZERO experience (DRAT!) in 3D printing, but a lot of experience with programming and hardware design, I am curious if this could be an avenue for further improvements to the already fantastic solidoodle.

Re: Orders Shipping List

One thing that would be nice is sensors or motors that would create a closed loop system so that the extruder's position is always known.  Then a little hangup and some skipped steps won't ruin the entire rest of the print.  My understanding is that it is expensive enough to not be worthwhile for low end printers.

A lot of it is to allow you to just hit print and walk away. It monitors all the variables that you would in a reprap style printer.

Everything is controlled, even the filament is sealed against moisture

Re: Orders Shipping List

This particular topic should problaby be moved to hacks, but for now, since it is here, the only way that I know of to be sure that the stepper motor actually took the step it was instructed to, is to have a rotary encoder with at least equal resolution of the motor itself.  For it to be a closed loop system, you would need to move up from the sanguinololu board since all the ports are used on the current application if you have a panelolu attached.  In any case, this would only detect a stall in the setpper motor, and would not catch a tooth on the belt skipping, nor would it catch backlash errors.  Linear position sensors would be far more expensive to implement I beleive.

Re: Orders Shipping List

I have been checking this thread looking for shipping updates.  The solidoodle 3 stuff is interesting but I was wondering if anyone had a shipping/received date with order number like people were doing a little earlier in this thread.

Re: Orders Shipping List

I am a bit confused here.  My original order now shows shipped, but was pending yesterday, and monday when I requested the upgrae to sd3.  Will I have to ship it back to get the upgrade?  I have been charged for the upgrade and additional shipping charges.  Perhaps only the two spools of filiment shipped.

Re: Orders Shipping List

They said several weeks ago that they expected to start shipping August this Monday.  Looks like they are going to hit that target, or only miss it by a day or so.

Re: Orders Shipping List

Today is 18 weeks for delivery of my original sd2 order.
DFW Airport, TX, United States  11/26/2012  3:18 A.M.  Out For Delivery
and when it get here, I have to refuse the printer since I changed my order to an sd3.  Sadly, I have to send it back home and wait until January.  But I believe the extra dimensions will be worth the wait.

Re: Orders Shipping List

So what would the ideal temperature range be if I was to build a controlled heated workspace vs. using a heated bed?  Between 80-120c?  Would that need to be altered once the first few layers are complete and from then on based on the mass and size of the print?

Re: Orders Shipping List

Hello Solidoodlers,

Order ID: #2810
Date Added: 17/07/2012
Shipped: 15/11/2012

Just arrived in the UK after a couple of days sorting out import duties. (20% of item value + £8 administration charge from local handler)
Looking forward to my first prints tomorrow!

I've seen lots of negativity in this thread which is a shame. I guess Solidoodle have failed to manage the expectation of their customers. The day before I ordered my printer I was told by email that it would take 6-10 weeks for delivery, however I can understand that things rarely work out the way you expect them to with a new company (having been there myself), especially one doing something that nobody else has attempted in terms of value & technology. The shipping estimate updates have been useful and have kept me on board.  The reality is that if it was not for Solidoodle I would not own a 3D printer because I would not be able to justify the cost of any other available units and I don't have the time to build my own. Please keep up the communication with your customers, it's the most important thing.

Tim.

Re: Orders Shipping List

Anybody know why it would take more than 2 weeks for 3 rolls of filament to ship?  I've already waited over 13 weeks for my printer and still nothing and now they can’t even ship out filament rolls in a timely manner. Really poor way to run a business if you ask me!

SD2 - Glass Bed, Fans on PCB and Y motor, Custom enclosure
Slicer - Simplify3D

Re: Orders Shipping List

Mine arrived today, but it was shipped without the case.  Very sad, but I did upgrade later on, so I suppose that may be the reason it was forgotten?  Who knows, I'd like to receive that one too soon big_smile

Anyhoo.

Date Ordered: August 7th
Date Shipped: Nov 27th
Date Received: Nov 29th

I figure if I receive my new toy by Halloween I'll be tickled pink.

The above quote was a couple of days after I placed my order.  I was kind of shocked at the time with all of the whining about long delivery delays.  How naive I was.

I would have still ordered the Solidoodle even if the website had stated that shipping was going to take 14-16 weeks.  Even though I wish the company would have been more conservative on their shipping estimates, I'm kind of glad that the Solidoodle is being delivered now instead of October due to all of the improvements and fixes done by the community and the company.

My Solidoodle was shipped yesterday 11/30/12 and according to UPS will be delivered by Friday 12/7/12.  Almost 16 weeks from order to shipment.
