Topic: Max Bed Size

I'm getting ready to implement Lawsy's QU-BD heated bed mod and ordered some glass. I found some 10*10 panels online for cheap, but didn't realize you could not cut it easily. Below is an image of a dry fit with the 10*10 sheet. Is it possible to use this or would  homing be an issue? Any tips on making this work or am I stuck with a box of useless glass?

Re: Max Bed Size

I think you are definitely going to have a problem with hitting the x axis motor.  Why not just take to a local glass shop to have them cut to size for you.  Should only be a couple of dollars at the most.

Re: Max Bed Size

I have a glass cutting tool, but read that you can't use it on tempered glass?

The glass can be slid to the side so that it clears the X motor, but it is below the home position. I expect this would be an issue with setting the z screw unless I go very slow.

Correct: you can not cut tempered glass without it going to pieces... if you have access to a kiln it is not too hard to remove the temper then cut it and then if you want to retemper it again.

Ya I saw reference to that in a video. Said you need to get it to 900f, let it cool for 8h then you can cut it. That and some trick with a flaming sting....All sounds a bit involved to save some $3 panels lol. I guess i could always set my Z screw with something other than the hotend, then put it on. Once that's set I don't foresee any issues. I'm sure something like this must have a thread on here, maybe I need to search some more.

Re: Max Bed Size

I've run the hotend into a glass bed pretty hard, never cracked one.

You bring up a good point...these are 3/16" glass, don't think I could possibly break it. So I guess I only risk breaking my MK4 mount which I could easily replace. Don't think it would be good for the Z motor, but I'll give it a shot.

Re: Max Bed Size

I would be impressed if you could break the MK4 mount.

There's play in the carriage and bed for this reason. I think you'd break the y-carriage before anything else, but you have a solid 5mm before that would happen.

Just start with your z-screw low, and adjust upwards.

Re: Max Bed Size

I stole a piece of glass out of a picture frame exactly the right size to start with... Dont think the mrs has noticed yet!
