Topic: Da Vinci Jr filament counter

I took apart the filament stepper and noticed that there is a counter wheel and encoder mounted to the stepper binding wheel. Since the is from a dead da Vinci Jr, I have no way of testing it now. My curiosity is if you can remove the counting wheel and then tape a good full filament NFC chip to the bottom of the spool rack as if it's a regualr chipped spool, then because it isn't counting, you could use open source filament. Feel free to try this as I have NOT yet. If I get the chance in the next few days, I will. I have 2 dead Da Vinci Jrs.

That wheel is used to detect if the motor is spinning or not and counting steps in each direction. Some motors used in printers use feedback to improve accuracy. If you remove the wheel you will most likely get an error as a failed motor or your accuracy will lessen and you will get poor prints.

Actually if you remove this wheel you will see no difference. I have a JR and have changed out the whole motor with no effect on the printer whats so ever except to stop the filament from slipping.
