Topic: 3d systems cube 3

So with all the cheap 3d systems cube 3rd generations around has anyone done anything with them?  I cant find a very good hack for using non 3d systems material.  Im not going to take the plunge knowing that its an orphaned product with proprietary filament without having a way to keep it going on rolls of material.

You would probably be able to swap out the controller to a Ramps or similar then it would be open source and not limited.  Once you get passed the controller it is just steppers and end stops.

Printing since 2009 and still love it!

yup - what Carl said - change out the controller board, load up your favorite flavor of firmware, and go to town with it.

Some of you may find this thread on the reprap forum interesting:

It's basically about buying these cheap and making them non-proprietary.

Re: 3d systems cube 3

I bought one for $150 with shipping. Once I use up the two carts it came with I may swap the electronics depending on the quality I get as it is. The carts are still $60 each and hold a 3rd of what you get in bulk. So hacking or converting is a necessary step with these.

I do have a question to those that have one. Mine was shipped with 1000 adhesion slides which are basically microscope slides and the seller claims they are needed and is included as a freebie. Most units don't include but need them according to the seller. However I can find no mention of them in the manual nor have I heard of a need for them in my years of printing. So what are they for or is the seller just shipping extra junk to get rid of it?

EDIT:

Got it running stock right now and these things are noisy.. Sounds like they are over driving the steppers like XYZ did.
