Topic: Extruder Stepper Motor 17PM-K142B

This is a fork from the original Titan upgrade thread (http://www.soliforum.com/forum/21/xyz-printing-davinci/). I have been on the search for a new stepper motor after I stupidly set mine on fire. Here is a response I received from a distributor:

Thank you for your interest in our company and products.
Unfortunately, this product is custom made and not available for individual sale.

If you are looking for a replacement, we recommend you contact the original manufacturer of your machine or equipment where the motor is assembled into and request replacement pieces

NMB Technologies Corporation

With that said I am now going to replace it with a more available part. Since I did the e3D Titan upgrade I am going to try and use these http://www.amazon.com/Short-Bipolar-Mot … e_o00_s00, which I am told are the same that Livi uses. I will post my findings here.

Re: Extruder Stepper Motor 17PM-K142B

I'm interested in this too.
Looks like it will make the whole thing a good bit lighter.

I'm wondering if this would also work ..... https://www.amazon.co.uk/17HS2408-4-lea … ds=Nema+17
Looks like it has the same type of connector.

don't see why it wouldn't you may have to swap pins though

Re: Extruder Stepper Motor 17PM-K142B

Yeah, I thought that too.
Any idea what the wiring is on the stock stepper ?

yes With the Davinci stepper motor pin 1 and 3 are winding A and pin 4 and 6 are winding B

Can you give the colors? Does this look right? This is based on pin 1 being on the bottom as it sites in the carriage.

Apologies, you could write what I know about steppers on the back of a stamp, but how does this correspond to the wiring on the Nema 17 ?

Re: Extruder Stepper Motor 17PM-K142B

This may help identify the colour coding on a stepper motor, they just need to be organised in the same groups. A & A-, B & B- http://soliforum.com/i/?gyX9n2M.jpg

The XYZ wiring as already been identified as

http://soliforum.com/i/?8tItXVs.jpg

As you see it corresponded to bipolar drive series, but the polarity is reversed.

Any help?

Re: Extruder Stepper Motor 17PM-K142B

Thanks Stuart.
I was looking at this one ...... https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01DJ32X2M/ … GJS9FZSTK3
Going by that chart, would I be right in saying the wiring for that stepper is :-

A  red
A- blue
B  green
B- black

I think you have it Kind Sir, I've also copied my post to the Titan Thread.

REMEMBER you must wire using th XYZ diagram Pin 1 - 6

1.        Blue
2.
3.        Red
4.        Black
5
6.        Green

Re: Extruder Stepper Motor 17PM-K142B

Great stuff, thanks again !
One more thing, do you need to make any changes in the firmware (repetier) or can you just bung it in and fire away ?

Re: Extruder Stepper Motor 17PM-K142B

So long as it is a 1.8degree stepper motor I can't see in FW anything that needs changing as you must calibrate the stepper gear, as in my post

Is rather you didn't "fire" away

Re: Extruder Stepper Motor 17PM-K142B

Looking at the Stepper Motor wiring diagram for the one your considering (17HS2408) the 4 lead wiring code is
http://soliforum.com/i/?UD9A6DN.jpg

Black        A
Green       -A

Red.         B
Blue.        -B

So for the Da Vinci Wiring code PINS 1 - 6

1.             Green (-A)
2.
3.             Black (A)
4.             Blue (-B)
5.
6.             Red (B)

I should say thank you for asking these queries, as you have made me research and now understand stepper motors. CHEERS

Re: Extruder Stepper Motor 17PM-K142B

Thanks again, it's really helping me get my head round this too.
Steppers are the one part of a printer I don't have much of a clue about.
Found this one, think it's the same one mentioned at the start of the thread ...... http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/121684006522? … EBIDX%3AIT

Edit : After taking a closer look, it is the same part number - 17HS08-1004S.
And the wiring is exactly as you said Stuart .....

Black(A+), Green(A-), Red(B+), Blue(B-)

So I reckon I'll probably go with that one.

Re: Extruder Stepper Motor 17PM-K142B

Why you want to change to a lower torque motor?

The XYZ stock stepper motor got 38Ncm and you want to change to a 13Ncm motor - I can't imagine any reason??? Even with the stock motor I have trouble with too less torque when printing at lower temperatures and I'm thinking about changing to a higher torque motor than the stock type!

https://shop.stoutwind.de/Nema-17-Schri … altemoment

13Ncm is very low for the extruder and I will forcast a lot of issues with extruder clicking!

Re: Extruder Stepper Motor 17PM-K142B

To be perfectly honest, I hadn't even given torque a thought.
Bare in mind though, we're talking about using this stepper with the E3D Titan, not the stock extruder.
We'll see how viperz28 gets on with it. I believe someone else is already using it with no issues as he said in the first post of this thread.

Re: Extruder Stepper Motor 17PM-K142B

The first step succeeded, the wiring is correct and I was able to load filament without any issues. I ordered the wrong connector so I made a hack jumper for now. I will try and print something later on today and see how it goes, it regard to torque, I too did not think too much about that. One thing I did notice is that filament did not extrude from the nozzle as fast as it did, it may have just been me....I will video it and see what you guys think.

In my tests I will be sure to listen for clicking, which filament or print would be a good test?

Re: Extruder Stepper Motor 17PM-K142B

Probably best to start off with some regular pla or abs although I guess flexible will be the ultimate test for it.

You say the filament extrudes slower? Have you calibrated the stepper motor, stock Extruder steps are around 99.00, with the Titan this raises to around 456.00. This needs to be changed in Repetier.

To answer the above, as the Titan as a 3:1 gearing, you only need 1/3 of the torque so 13Ncm should be sufficient
