Topic: Another one bites the dust

After 3 days and maybe half a dozen prints my brand new S-3 extruder stopped heating :-(  12.8V at the connector, zero ohms across the heater element. I've sent an e-mail. Hopefully I'll hear back on Monday. It was fun while it was running. I printed one calibration cube, two one inch die, the dial indicator holder, a small elephant and the gear cube in a 2" size. The second half of the gear cube looked a bit dodgy, especially when compared to the first half. I was trying to print another after making some adjustment when things went south. Hopefully I'll get a quick reply and fix. Love it so far.

Hmm, I'm wondering if my replacement hot end from Solidoodle will get here before the replacement hot end I ordered from China 2 weeks after I sent the bad one back to the Solidoodle folks. Anyone care to hazard a guess? My  brand new S3 printer has been sitting on my desk gathering dust for over three weeks now :-(

Makes me wonder if it is taking a high priority fix like yours this long, how long will it take a low priority fix like a new threaded rod for my z-axis going to take.
Let's hope it is just a mess up in paper work.

No trees were harmed in the creation of this email, though some electrons were horribly inconvenienced.

You just have to keep reminding them - emails, posts on their Facebook page, etc.

You would think that a dead heater  would  be the # 1 concern, since that's the most common issue. SD should " overnight" a replacement.(imho) I have been down over a week now.Very frustrating waiting  for the printer and  then  after just 16 days it fails.oh SD says they will ship me a new one. I returned the old one, they got it Thursday.Should have shipped new one  on Friday.lol I guess I  could fry  eggs on the build platform while I wait.

SD3, E3D hotend,linear bearing on x/y axis',pillow block bearing on y conneting rod, ball bearngs on front y axis, fan on y stepper motor.

I hear you, mine died after 3 days. It's been over three weeks with numerous e-mails. I would have repaired it myself if I'd have known how long it was going to take. On the bright side, the replacement shipped on Friday and is currently at the Los Angeles sorting facility. With luck, I'll have it tomorrow, Tuesday at the latest. You can log into your order page at Solidoodle  and see if they have shipped parts to you yet. I wish I'd have known that 2 weeks ago when I thought the parts were on their way and ran to the mailbox after work each day ;-)

I waited 7 weeks to get the printer and it failed in 16 days of use.Getting really frustrated as I have returned the  failed part. They got it Thursday of last week. I ordered a New hotend on the 12th and its still shows pending .oh yea if your wondering I  have emailed support several times and they say it will be taken care of. But when? So much for 2-3 business days! I guess in my case the squeaky wheel doesn't get the grease.

Their heating resistors are currently a massive issue. I hope it was just a batch problem and we won't see more and more failures.

The problem with the resistors is the variation in the external dimensions, which obviously isn't a QC point in most resistor factories.

doesn't fit well in the cylindrical hole (duh, it isn't cylindrical) then it will have localized hotspots. Some last longer than others because some fit better than others.

These are the right physical size, but require 24v:

Ideal would be a cartridge heater that's 12v, 25-30w, and 5mm in diameter to fit the SD blocks.

umm Got a novel idea ,SD should furnish a  spare resistor with new printers since that seems to be the part that fails 1st. That would cut down on down time at least.
I  got a spare battery with my calipers, same principle

Would it be good preventative maintenance to pull one of these out and wrap it in some foil or thermal paste?  Would that make any difference in its probably lifespan?

It would probably help, but I bet SD does paste already. I know they have thermal paste in their shop, since it's on the extruder heatsink.

Really the ideal solution is for SD to use dedicated heater cartridges.

amen to that. It has been said here  many times , a  resistor was never meant to be a heater.

i was printing a new extruder with my 9 days old SD2 to fix my mendel and put in a new J-head Mk IV with it.
the heat resistor failed on me before I could get the extruder printed and now I've got 2 non-functional printers sitting around!

I finally got my new hot end from SD and my printer lives once again. Let's hope the heater lasts longer this time around.
