When you change the filament in this printer, the new plastic comes with a chip cosponsoring to the color and capacity of the material. I was wondering if that chip would affect my ability to use another brand (with a bigger spool and more color variation) in this printer. Does anybody know?
They are working on cracking it. There is a running thread on the subject.
When you print it also writes data to that chip as well to keep track of the amount of filament left. So while you could put a stock spool in and print fron another after market, it will stop you when it thinks that spool is too low. Then you will have also wasted a stock spool as it is now useless.
Printing since 2009 and still love it!
