Topic: Print quality issues

hello everyone,
I'm losing my mind here I've been having this issue for quite some time now(see pictures). I was runing Cura 15.04.2 but made the switch to Repetier which i really like but still learning how to use it. Ive read every article and seen every video about leveling the print bed i've tried the hair spray, blue tap which works sometime, printing with brims rafts and 90% of the time they still pull away. now recently this weird oozed look started to happen I'm so close to throwing this thing out the windrow!! >:( I've also re adjusted all the axis and even changed my filament (im ruining ABS by the way). someone please help because I'm just about burnt out with this thing! ive attached pictures of my settings and what the prints look like. the black print is with the settings pictured the red filament prints was used with cura
thanks guys and gals,
Tim

Re: Print quality issues

And as i was writing this the print broke free. At first when i tried repetier i didn't notice the filament diameter was set to 3mm (im runiing 1.75mm ) and i got amazing quality print but the layers would break apart pretty easily anyone have thoughts on that?

Re: Print quality issues

To start, it looks like you might have some bad filament. If you have another roll (preferably not Solidoodle brand), try that.
Also, you are over extruding. Recalibrate your extruder. Also, use a digital caliper to accurately measure the diameter of the filament. It is almost never a true 1.75 and diameter varies from roll to roll.

Re: Print quality issues

Too add, if you are using ABS then get rid of the blue tape. That is only for PLA in most cases. When using ABS use just bare glass with hairspray (Aquanet brand) or Elmers purple glue sticks. Set the the bed temp to 70 and you should have no issue with sticking.

It looks like you need to measure your beds actual temp as I see what looks like scorching or browning from excessive heat. Your bed may be much hotter than reported.

Re: Print quality issues

okay cool i found a decent website for calculating my extrusion multiplier just printing out a test piece to get some numbers to see if that helps i don't think its the filament its a brand new non solidoodle brand and being X mas eve i cant get a piece of glass cut up hmm ill keep you posted on my results

Re: Print quality issues

you do not need a website to calculate your extrusion multiplier.

In fact, I would advise against it.

It isnt hard to to calibrate if you follow a few simple steps...

I wrote the attached for a facebook group I belong to. Maybe you will find it useful.

Re: Print quality issues

okay guys you ROCK!!!!!!!! this print came out perfect! i cant wait to try the glass plate and tweak some more of the setting. You guys made my Christmas thank you so much!!!! I attached a picture of my new settings and my newest print.
also i didn't have any Elmer's glue but what i did have was super glue..... though it worked HOLY FLUMES highly recommend you don't do that unless you want a cheap buzz!
but again you guys rock and i thank you some much!

Re: Print quality issues

you are still over extruding a little, but yeah, much better looking print. smile

Re: Print quality issues

I've experimented with Krazy glue so I know all about said fumes big_smile

Another tip, since your rod is not metric, you want your layer height to be a different number. Here's a good guide:
.1= .09878
.2= .1976
.3= .2963
.4= .3951
So instead of layer height of .3, use .2963

Glad you are happy!

This is very useful if you ever plan to experiment with motors or new threaded rods
