Topic: Extruder thermistor issues

Hi again
After working away with the e3d v6 for a few months everything has been working great up until last week when my prints started shifting on the y axis I traced this back to a loose belt.

After connecting it back up The thermistor was reading out 258 degrees celsius and fluctuating  up and down by 0.5. I tested the resistance of the thermistor and got a good reading of 100 ohms.

I tried a new thermistor and got the same issues. I then tried changing the wire between the thermistor and motherboard but it did not work.

When I disconnected the thermistor repetier does not even recognise it and continues to output 258. Not sure what it could be any help would be  appreciated. everything else is operating including the extruder heater.

Sounds like the input on the controller is shorted. Not much you can do but replace the controller. Since you used a known good thermistor that rules out it. Have you ohmed out the wires from the thermistor to the board? That would be the only other thing.

I tested the resistance between the thermistor and its connector the board and got a reading of 75ohms. Is that what you mean by
"ohmed out the wires from the thermistor to the board". How can i test for certain if the board is shorted. Really hoping its not shorted them boards are expensive $$$

Just so you can understand how to read issues on a thermistor problem here is crash course in thermistor 101 in case you don't know how they work.

Essentially a thermistor is a resistor. But unlike normal resistors that have a fixed value, e thermistor has a variable value that changes depending on the external temp around it or the surface it is in contact with.

At low temps the resistance is high and at high temps the resistance goes low. For the particular thermistors we normally use the resistance at room temp (around 23c) should be close to 100Kohms.  If you look at the graph below it will give you an idea of what the resistance of a functioning thermistor is like at given temps.

So try to measure your distance again. You did not say if that 258 was at room temp or heated.

Re: Extruder thermistor issues

The 258 was the temperature reported in repetier. When I heated the extruder it was still reading the same.

Re: Extruder thermistor issues

I connected the bed temperature sensor to the extruder temperature input and It is doing the same thing as before so the problem isnt related to the thermistor. How do I test with the input pins on the board to see if they are definetely the problem. Also if I reupload the firmware to the board could that potentially fix the problem. I had a look at the board and could not see any issues.

Re: Extruder thermistor issues

Did you select the correct thermistor in the firmware before you uploaded it?

Re: Extruder thermistor issues

Yes I selected the right one in the firmware.
