Topic: When could I disconnect the computer and keep printing?

As the printings take usually long, it's normal to need to take away or turn off the computer while building. What is the moment in which you can unplug the computer-printer usb connection but the printing carries on by itself?

(Simplify3d, Repetier-host, Repetier firmware, Da Vinci 1.0a)

Thanks.

If you are using Repetier firmware then you no longer have the option to disconnect the computer or turn it off. This firmware does not write to the SDCard like the stock did and instead the data is fed and processed live. The only way you can be PC free is to extend the SDcard out to where you can access it and put files on it to print. Or set up one of the Toshiba Wifi SDcards with the data on the stock SDcard then you can push files to it over wifi and print from the LCD on the printer.

You can send the GCODE to the SD card through Repetier Host and then print from SD or from the printer's control panel directly.  No need for a wifi card or an extender.

You can but depending on the file size atleast in my case could take 10 minutes or more to transfere.

Re: When could I disconnect the computer and keep printing?

I have personally had 0 luck with SD printing from repetier. It takes 6-7 minutes to write onto the Card, then the printer freezes up when I try to print from the card. You could use repetier server though (I think?)

While transferring to the SD card with Repetier is possible it is extremely slow.  I have my Toshiba wifi card but waiting on the correct adapter.  When I have transferred prints to the SD card I have not had an issue with printing things.

I had to have thought about this (no option to disconnect using Repetier-host) since a Luc's explanation talked about that live process.
Thanks

Very instructive posts, thank you.

Most people print from SDcard or have dedicated pc or laptop for printers. Some also setup a Raspberry Pi with Octoprint to run their printers.

Lucs post simply daid that because there is error checking at both ends of the cable the chance of an error is low. He did not say however that you could unplug or turn off the pc while printing.

Wow, I have a Raspberry Pi. I bought it without any specific aim apart from maybe some learning (absolute beginner or ignorant in electronics). But with no much time and initial excitement lost I forgot it in a drawer. It is brand new right now. So it could be a great thing to use it with my printer. Now, I would have to find a site with easy instructions to implement Octoprint.
