Topic: Dead USB after losing power momentarily?

Had both SD4s up and running just a little bit ago... and for some unknown reason we temporarily lost power. Computer and both printers stopped, lights went out...  There are no storms anywhere near by, so it wasn't that...

Now, we happen to live in the country, and we are the last house on the power service line... brief power "blips" are somewhat common, altho they haven't been too bad the last few of years (since we had the line running to the house buried instead of running overhead).

Power comes back on, turned computer back on, and tried to reconnect the printers in RH - #1 connected fine, #2 wont connect.
Open device manager, and #2 COM port is missing (printer is powered up and connected via USB cable)

Tried moving the cable to another port - nada...
Tried using a different USB cable - nada...
Tried using a different cable in a known working port (the one my keyboard is plugged into) - still nada.
Just for grins, disconnected #1 and moved it to the port that #2 used to be on - shows up just fine in device manager, so the port on the computer is good.

So at this point, I am going to assume that the power "blip" (outage, surge, or whatever it was) killed the USB socket/chip on the Printerboard of #2. sad

Guess I will be swapping #2 over to run on a Ramps setup, since we happen to have a spare here.
Anyone have any words of wisdom to impart on the swap?
I will be reading through the sticky thread on the subject, but interested in any other thoughts, comments, suggestions - which version of Marlin to install, etc...

Right now, I am heading out to pick up a UPS to plug both computer and printers into to prevent this from happening again. hmm

if you can afford it I recommend the RUMBA over the RAMPS. do you have both of your printers on surge protectors? sounds to me like a surge got you for sure.

tongue big_smile big_smile
Yeah, get a Rumba  you'll never have USB problems with one of those wink
Seriously though, what board are we dealing with here?

Printit Industries Model 8.10 fully enclosed CoreXY, Chamber heat
3-SD3's & a Workbench all fully enclosed, RH-Slic3r Win7pro, E3D V6, Volcano & Cyclops Hot End
SSR/500W AC Heated Glass Bed, Linear bearings on SS rods. Direct Drive Y-axis, BulldogXL
Thanks to all for your contributions

LOL, you crack me up, ward... tongue now that I am thinking about it, I think I have a backup Rumba as well - would just need to install stepper drivers - which I can steal from the Ramps... smile As it stands right now, cant afford to "buy" anything right now - it is all about what I have on hand...

The board in question is the rev E printerboard - stock SD4 board. #2 has had very little done to it, aside from Lawsy carriages, new smooth rods, and a fan installed over the board (cut a hole in the side panel just for that).

and yes, both were plugged into the same surge strip - one is fine, the other not so much... hmm

I do know that surge suppressor strips will only handle so many surges & then they need to be replaced - looks like it may be time for a new one of those as well, but the UPS I just bought should handle things until I get a new surge strip.

so... any words of wisdom about the rev E board? any hope of resurrecting it? keep in mind my track record with USB isn't the greatest - LOL.

Re: Dead USB after losing power momentarily?

Have you tried reflashing the Printrboard?

Re: Dead USB after losing power momentarily?

Well lo & behold....
Pulled #2 out to check the board over for any obvious signs of damage - nothing obvious... did a little housecleaning while I had it opened up (kinda dusty) - put all back together & set it back in its spot, plugged in the power supply - we have power (had it before, too)
just for grins, I plugged the USB cable from my i3 into the back of it & into the same port it was in on the computer...and it popped up in the device manager! yippee!

time to see if I can connect in RH and get things moving again...

Autocorrect fail, meant to say reflashing.

Darn auto-correct! lol

Have never flashed a Printrboard. have done a Rumba, done a Ramps, but not a Printrboard... gonna have to learn eventually, tho.

Do the Printrboard's have some kind of resetting fuse or circuit breaker on them? that would explain why it wouldn't work earlier but does now after sitting for a bit...
