Topic: Gaps in print after new e3d lite

Hi my solidoodle had been down for about 4 month with broken peek and hotend so i just got my E3d 6Lite it extrudes amazing and looks like it works perfectly but my prints have noticeable gaps.
It has the same .4 nozzle ( im pretty sure my solidoodle 2 had same size nozzle)

This print is the same gcode i used on my old hotend 4 months ago and it printed with out those gaps.

Also i try printing a new place holder for my other solidoodle3 but the higher the print goes the more bloby it gets and its running over it the higher it goes it seems like its not lowering the bed enough.

Thanks

Re: Gaps in print after new e3d lite

Calibrate for steps and flow rate per the WIKI.  If that doesn't fix it have a look at setting your extrusion widths correctly.

Re: Gaps in print after new e3d lite

Oh i saw there was a firmware update required... i thought it was kinda plug in play with some mods... so frustrating having both printers down
thanks wardjr

Re: Gaps in print after new e3d lite

Because the melt zone is so small (a good thing) you'll find that the E3d will more precisely react to improper calibration.

Re: Gaps in print after new e3d lite

Yea it was printing nice you can see the flat object in the print but the the gaps were constant all the way up and for the tall part it seemed like the bed wasnt going down far enough during parts the nozzle was running over the part
il try the firmware update see how that goes

Re: Gaps in print after new e3d lite

Is this the best way to update my firmware?

Re: Gaps in print after new e3d lite

depends on what board you have?

Re: Gaps in print after new e3d lite

Ok i had the 644p, updated already but still giving me the same print, but after the first layer the plastic is getting closer/touching the perimeter also i think it is extruding to much when its moving across the print its hitting and skidding over the plastic.
I'm using slic3r what whould i need to change in there to help it print better

Re: Gaps in print after new e3d lite

Calibrate steps/mm and enter in EEPROM within RH (100 mm of filament called for should equal 100mm pulled into the extruder)
Then print a calibration cube 20mm with a single perimeter and no infill or top layer.
Use a caliper to measure the single wall thickness and adjust extrusion multiplier until it measures .48mm
Also use a layer height of .2963 instead of .3

Re: Gaps in print after new e3d lite

I'm noticing idk if it it was doing this before but the extruder stops for a bit then the bed lowers on the cube the part that the bed lowers the cube is higher than the other corners

11

Re: Gaps in print after new e3d lite

The right part of the cube is were it would stop for a fraction of a second and drop the bed and continue
, the extrusion is extruding accurate now
these are the cubes 20mm measurements so far.
x = 19.30
y = 19.55
z = 19.85

Kind of forgot to follow instructions, the outer dimensions of the cube will tell you nothing about extrusion rate.

Ok i got it to .48mm on the cube but im still geting the same gaps

Re: Gaps in print after new e3d lite

I have some thoughts but first, can you tell me what brand and type filament that is?
Also what temps are you using?

Re: Gaps in print after new e3d lite

IC3d natural 1.75 its a good filiments its like 30 a spool and temp im at 215 on the v6 lite extruder and 105 on bed

16

Re: Gaps in print after new e3d lite

wardjr i think i may of found out i checked my belts the one that moves the exturder seems loose im going search how to tighten it and il see if that works

17

Re: Gaps in print after new e3d lite

Loose belts will definitely cause those gaps.
Is the filament ABS or PLA?
E3d temps for ABS should be 235-245

Re: Gaps in print after new e3d lite

Ok i tightened them almost all the gaps closed there are still some but not as bad also getting alot of extra plastic on the edges, see on pic.
Thanks for the help slowly geting closer to normal

Re: Gaps in print after new e3d lite

A couple theories:
1) Go to printer settings and click on the "Extruder" tab. Under extruder 1 section, what does it read? I have had some issues based off of RH and Slic3r settings conflicting.
2) Bad filament can be a culprit. The vertical ridges seem like it is one of your problems. It is obvious that if it is, then it may be masking another issue or two.
3) Have you leveled your bed and Z tab lately? The E3D products change your height and may take a few prints to perfect without proper instruments for measurement (dial indicator). With an uneven first layer, some spots may extrude perfectly and other give gaps....like in your pics.
SD beds are thin aluminum and warp over time, so you may also be hitting dips. You want your first layer to look like a ribbon instead of a thread. Once it begins printing, while watching the first layer, it will be quite clear if your bed is level/warped.
If warping of the bed is the issue, consider spending $8 for a section of glass or mirror and use AquaNet. These are superior to printing on kapton smile
From the looks of your most recent print, leveling is a suspect.

Re: Gaps in print after new e3d lite

I leveled the bed tighten the belts and messed with slic3r a bit i got some of the gaps gone but still get some openings and some extra filament at the edges

Re: Gaps in print after new e3d lite

What infill are you running? To me it looks like you have two walls with 1-2 thicknesses, with little or no infill in-between then a solid top layer that is not completely supported. Even though the model may look like solid walls, it appears they are printing with an inside and an outside. Maybe try a higher infill. As previously stated, make sure your first layer has a little smush to it, so that it is slight wider than your extruder but not so flat that you can see through the ribbon to the bed.

Re: Gaps in print after new e3d lite

100%infill i know how to print these its just printing off on the perimiters different since i had to replace solidoodle original hotend with e3d .

Na i try shake it but its on there sturdy, i got it to print prefectly no extra fillament or pimples nice and smooth layers but still geting the same gaps in the same place every time

Re: Gaps in print after new e3d lite

Sounds like your x axis isn't perpendicular to the y axis.  It certainly won't hurt to spend some time aligning the 2 y axis belts.
