Topic: Heated Bed - Need a new one?

Hey guys, more problems with my Airwolf here.

Not really sure what's going on. Some of you know I just did an upgrade on the hotend. I changed over to an E3D v6 + Volcano. Right after doing that, I noticed that my heated bed wouldn't get up to 140C like it used to. It would top out around 132, and to get there it would take forever (30+ minutes).

I thought it might be a power supply issue, after all my new hotend does draw more power than my old one. So I connected the bed input to a separate 12v supply, and it still took it forever to heat up and topped out at 132-ish. I had to up the voltage to 15v to get the bed to heat up.

Take a look at the attached temperature chart for the bed; even at 15 volts, it still seems to be struggling.

Is it time for a new heated platform? What do you guys think? Thanks as always!

Re: Heated Bed - Need a new one?

140??? That's really hot for your bed.  I see no reason or need to run it past 110 and most run 100-105.  Can I ask why you are trying to run it at 140?

And it won't stick at 132?

Re: Heated Bed - Need a new one?

I had issues getting it to stick well before at 140, but I havent really had any issues after upgrading the nozzle. I suppose it might stick around 130. I'll give it a try

140C is Airwolf's recommended bed temperature for polycarbonate

As am I!

I wish I could get by with only heating it to 110; it would really cut down on my heat-up time.

I'm not going to damage anything by running the bed at 15v, right? It seems to be about 1 ohm, so when cold it draws around 14.5 amps at 15v.

EDIT: Corrected my math

Re: Heated Bed - Need a new one?

That remains to be seen I guess.  Typically I will not hesitate to up the voltage on my bed heaters but 15v seems to be pushing it.  If it used to heat up much faster I would take a look at all connectors to ensure good contact.  heaters draw a lot of current and it only takes one bad or not great connection to seriously slow things down.

Re: Heated Bed - Need a new one?

Doesn't look like bed failure to me (assuming that screenshot is at 12v), looks like the new firmware has different bed PID settings.

Probably should re-autotune. Also could be more airflow across the bed, if you changed fans.

The screenshot was taken while running 15v. I will do a re-tune at 12v and see if it helps any

You can...but you will need to get a DC/AC SSR to control it...no big deal as long as you're comfortable running 110V into your print area...

First I would try the PID tune as elmoret suggested.

If you decide to go this route please take the time to understand the risks.  I would be more than happy to walk you through the process via PM.

Re: Heated Bed - Need a new one?

If you you think you need a new heatbed check out the seller 3dheatbeds on ebay. these guys make them they are an OEM in USA.
They have a good selection of sizes some are designed as high temp boards and some are rated at 24volts. May be worth looking at . thermistor and prewire options extra.
