Topic: (SD4) Drive Gear problems and more?

Hello,
So I have been printing some stuff and everything was going fine never had a problem yet, but today it was going perfect, then suddenly there was a lot of filament dust and a big ball of filament at the end of the extruder.
I tried to unclog it, but when I try to retract or extrude on Repetier, my drive gears dont move at all, doesnt sound like its stuck, sounds like it just isnt doing anything. the grip on the filament is strong and I cant pull out the filament.

Any Idea what it could be? or what I can do?

[edit]
Ok now it seems like I cant even heat the extruder anymore. But I can heat the print bed... No power going to the extruder? but the two fans are working

check resistance continuity on the heater wires .  Bad /loose connection broken wire burned out heater?

Ok I'll try and check that. Would that also explain why I can't extrude or retract?

Yep, no heat = no extrude.

Re: (SD4) Drive Gear problems and more?

So I probed the red molex conenctor on the extruder end like a guide i found said and it reads 7.3ohms and I checked the continuity and im getting a beep.

[edit]
I tested my thermistor by heating the hot end while connected to Repeteir and its working fine
Im getting a message I never noticed before in the Log that says something about firmware and links me to the site for a firmeware.

Re: (SD4) Drive Gear problems and more?

are you getting voltage on the other end of the connector with the hear on is the connector connected to the board. You started near the heater now work you way back to the board.  check voltage on the connector then on the board.
you can also check wire continuity.
7.3 Ohms should be good assuming a 12 v power supply it should be putting out about 20 watts  with that reading.

Ok so I tested the volts at the other end of the connector going to the board and its not reading any volts (with it on and Heat Extruder on) and no continuity also. So Ill try test it at the board now

Re: (SD4) Drive Gear problems and more?

Ok so where on the board should I probe? and should I have it plugged in while testing?
Here is what mines looks and the other pic is from the solidoodle support site minus all the wires.
So tracing the wires, it seems like it connects to the two right above the "3" in the nonwire board picture. that the correct? Im guessing one is for the heater and other is for the thermistor.

[edit]
I turned it on and clicked "heat extruder" and tested the top one (not the yellow one, above the "3") and it reads around 12v.
I tested the continuity of the connector that I unplugged from it and still no beeps... does that mean the problem is between the two connectors? a cut in the wire?

Re: (SD4) Drive Gear problems and more?

Oh gosh! the wire at the connector got cut! idk how that happened... I never pulled of even touched it before... wow ok. I feel dumb. Ill go ahead and resolder it back.

[edit]
Ok after resoldering it, Im still not getting any continuity... any idea? haha

Sadly it didnt fix it. haha idk if its the wire. but i test the wire for continuity and get nothing...

Re: (SD4) Drive Gear problems and more?

Those connectors are junk, you may be better off to just make up new ones.
If you have power at the pins and resistance at the heater, the problem is in between.  That leaves the connectors or the wires themselves.  Good luck.

Looks like the connection at the board end doesnt have the best connection, but it was working fine up until now. but ill try make a better connection at the other end and see how it goes.

Re: (SD4) Drive Gear problems and more?

Ok so I removed, stripped and soldered the connections and got a good beep. put everything back and its working good again!
Thank you all so much for the help. couldnt have done it without you guys

Re: (SD4) Drive Gear problems and more?

Glad to be of assistance.  Seems like you figured out most of it.
