Looks good! I like that it's got plenty of space for filament management.

I had to take off the spool holder to change rolls xD I'm gonna make one that sits on the table so it will be easy to switch. I'm also thinking of trying to make a top fed system. There is some room on the top, the roll could hang between the top bars or something.

I really started this enclosure because I was almost out of PLA and realized that my 2nd roll was ABS. Good excuse to build an enclosure haha. I think its working out really well though. I wonder how well the heat is being held in the chamber. I need an accurate thermometer.

The temp is not as important as it being stable. The issue with abs is preventing rapid temp changes caused by drafts.

Hi everyone;   I was leaning towards a Kossel 2020 delta printer from Folger Tech...  Then I found this forum and this thread...  I and ordered the printer this morning...  I want to thank all of you for the info that is here, great stuff..  I realize there are challenges but the knowing them makes it easier to handle..  I'm looking forward to the build and sharing my ups and downs with everyone... Now I can't wait....   any idea on the real turn around to ship... I read 2-5 business days...

Re: Folger Tech Kossel Unboxing and First Impressions (Pic Heavy)

Thanks to this thread, I ordered my Kossel from Folger Tech last night. This is my first 3d printer kit and, no, I did not play with an Erector set when I was a kid, so we'll see how that goes.
As it's been a while since the kit came on the market and it seems to have had quite some improvements since, I shall post some pictures on how it comes out of the box these days once it got here.
Wish me luck! I have a feeling I might need it smile

Re: Folger Tech Kossel Unboxing and First Impressions (Pic Heavy)

it isn't too bad of a kit to build. I got one, too. smile

the aluminum corners are just a hair off on the geometry, so it will take a little squeezing to get everything put together for the top & bottom sections, but it can be done. Be sure to check your plastic parts over carefully as well. a couple of my parts weren't very good quality and required re-printing - lucky for me, I have other printers to do that with. otherwise the kit goes together pretty well.

I did make a couple other minor changes during assembly - different end-stop mounts, an E3D Lite 6 hotend & a different extruder motor mount, but it is, for the most part, a good kit as shipped.

getting the effector dialed in to run level is the hardest part of the build - and it really isn't "hard" to do, just a little time consuming. Once it is dialed in tho, it works very well. smile

Re: Folger Tech Kossel Unboxing and First Impressions (Pic Heavy)

I sure am excited and eager to get my hands on the kit and get started. It's funny how Folger Tech handles the orders and tracking numbers. The order is listed as paid and fulfilled and lists a Fedex tracking number but Fedex has no record of the number. Well, the order also contained a note that the items require a handling time of 1-5 days. So I assume they are being handled right now and were not given to Fedex yet. Not a big deal but somewhat unusual I'd say. :-)
Anyways, I have a lot of other stuff to work on at this point and still need to clean up the work bench before starting another project, so just as well.

I think it poor practice but many businesses consider an item shipped when the tracking number is generated. For me its not shipped till its on the carriers truck, but they dont do it this way anymore.

Re: Folger Tech Kossel Unboxing and First Impressions (Pic Heavy)

yup, tracking number is created as soon as the label is printed, but until it gets scanned by the carrier it will not show up in the tracking software

and I have had tracking numbers not show anything for days, then suddenly it shows up as "out for delivery" - pretty obvious it wasn't being scanned like it was supposed to be.

Re: Folger Tech Kossel Unboxing and First Impressions (Pic Heavy)

Fedex picked it up this morning. 3 days of "handling" in my case but no estimate for delivery yet. As it is in NH at this point and has to get to AZ, there is no way this will arrive this week. So the weekend will be dedicated to make some room on the work bench as well as getting some boxes from HF to sort the bag of screws I've seen earlier in this thread.

Re: Folger Tech Kossel Unboxing and First Impressions (Pic Heavy)

The package finally arrived today. I think the snow storm in Colorado might have been the reason for a day of delay in delivery. Anyway, the Kossel made here in good shape.

They still don't provide a reasonable packing list for checking the contents of the package upon arrival.

I put together the basic structure after sorting the hardware into a compartment box. Very helpful that step! The few printed parts looked pretty decent and did not need a lot of cleanup. When I tried to screw on the belt carriages to the slider assemblies, I noticed that the lower screw M3x16 was protruding quite a bit through the Nylok nut. I checked for interference with the 2020 profile and sure enough the slider did not go on.
I ground the 16mm screw down to 13mm and then it just barely got through the nylon insert of the nut. A 12mm screw would not even engage the nylon insert, so that would be too short and I don't think Folger put in enough extra to deviate from the plan anyway.
Once the screws were shortened I tried all 3 sliders for smooth movement. Ouch! What a let-down! I wouldn't call any of the sliders a smooth mover! The wheels all turn nicely and easily as long as they are off the 2020 profile. As soon as they are slid on though you can see that the force that is holding them on makes the wheel on the spring side cant a bit (I have the tension screw all loose and even removed it to see if it got better). It appears to me that the wheels are very narrow and sink into that V-slot more than they would have to. I wonder if this is part of the problem. Not liking this movement so far and I wonder if it is worth to continue at this point.
I can't see how this could print efficiently when the sliders all sticky and positioning is more luck than control...

They changed the design from when Heartless and I got ours. Ours had linear rails with built in sliders that mounted to each tower with 6 or 8 screws. There was then a printed part that mounted on those to connect the belts and CF rods to.

Yeah, I thought about buying some rails and putting those on. Maybe I see if I can find some suitable wheels first, Something that is wider than the 7mm they provide and a bit smaller in diameter to offset the increased tension by riding higher on the 2020.

If go back to post 89 in this thread and watch that video you will see how yours should have been before they changed it. Not sure why they changed unless it was the cost of the rails which suspect..

Re: Folger Tech Kossel Unboxing and First Impressions (Pic Heavy)

Carl - mine has the roller wheels like MacPara's does. However, the cheap Sintron kit we got actually had better looking wheels so I made a swap... hmm  one of my "minor" changes...

the bearing railss I think were swapped to the roller carriages for a couple of reasons. One was problems with the rails - sticky bearings and such - too many "claims" on them, the other is cost in general. the roller carriages are by far a cheaper alternative, and more than likely less problematic

Re: Folger Tech Kossel Unboxing and First Impressions (Pic Heavy)

Even still those are odd roller set ups. The ones I have seen use a roller on the back so it keeps the side wheels riding on the flats rather than in the grooves. But I guess that again would complicate and raise cost.

With that design unless there where wheels on all 4 sides you would need a sliding surface that would still create a significant amount of drag which is what you guys are probably feeling. However there is some considerable torque in those motors so it may not matter..

Re: Folger Tech Kossel Unboxing and First Impressions (Pic Heavy)

Hm, I don't know how the rails could be more sticky than my carriages. With no tension added at all, I can push these up and down with a varying amount of force. I mean, I feel the resistance changing  during a constant motion move and it changes in sine-wave pattern, repeatedly going through harder areas then easing up and tightening again. With two of them I can actually feel a constant vibration like a grind while moving them up and down the tower.
This is awful and I can't see how this could provide any reasonable motion for printing. The wheels feel fine when not under pressure of the carriage, so I really don't know what to do about this.
