Topic: What is the white cement on heat core?

Hi Everyone,

I was clearing a clog on my SD2 hotend and broke away the white cement paste stuff from the core. Can anyone tell me what exactly that stuff is so I can pick some up (image attached)? In fact, is it critical to the assembly?

Can't tell you exactly what it is, but I did the same, and repaired it quite well with plain-ole-JB Weld.  Worked great till I replaced the hot end with an E3D.  A lot cheaper than some thermal compound.  Give it a try..

I think it's cement but if everything is properly strain relieved I don't believe you need it anyway. Maybe run a pid autotune just in case it affects temperature a bit.

JB Weld...brilliant! Thanks for the pro-tip! I certainly will get an EV3. I even printed out the parts to receive a EV3v6 just last week.

I've never done a PID autotune, but will give it a go since the current hotend is actually slightly upgrade from the original. I was looking at these PID tuning instructions:

It's interesting that they run it with the hot end cold. I would think that you'd want to bring it up to the desired temperature (195 C in my case) and run it.

The PID autotune cycles as many times as you request, so the actual tuning happens at temperature. I use 8 cycles. The more cycles, the better your PID calibration will be up to a limit

I believe the temperature ramp time is also figured into the PID calibration as well. That is why they start cold.

I have tried to run the PID autotune with a cold extruder and it would time out every time (on an SD4).

Pre-heat the extruder to your desired temp, then turn it off and run the M command immediately after...

M301 Sxxx C8 - where xxx = your desired temp. the C8 tells it to run 8 times - i think the default run is 3 times?

This method has worked great for me and I get pretty good results with the changes made.

SD4 with Lawsy carriages, Rumba board, & new 12v PSU, E3D v6, mirror bed plate, X motor fan.
