Topic: Filament or Hot End?

Can anyone verify that the filament that ships with the press is junk? I'm having a hard time figuring out if it's the hot end or the filament that sux. I'm leaning toward the material, but don't have any other filament to experiment with at the moment...

I have made a few really good parts, but most of my prints fail because of hot end issues. At times the motor will make a thump sound and skip steps, like it doesn't have the power to move the filament. When this happens I can usually crank the heat up to about 265 and it will start to push the material again. I've been thru the typical initial fixes, trimpot, grub screw, z height calibration....

Re: Filament or Hot End?

SD  filament is in my opinion not near as good as many other brands.  I would focus my energy there and not on your hot end.

Printit Industries Model 8.10 fully enclosed CoreXY, Chamber heat
3-SD3's & a Workbench all fully enclosed, RH-Slic3r Win7pro, E3D V6, Volcano & Cyclops Hot End
SSR/500W AC Heated Glass Bed, Linear bearings on SS rods. Direct Drive Y-axis, BulldogXL
Thanks to all for your contributions

That's kinda what I was thinking. I have some hatchbox filament on the way, hopefully that helps...

Re: Filament or Hot End?

The 1/2 spool that came with my printer was VERY brittle.  Getting it to print well was difficult and when I did, I could crush the print with one hand.  Picked up some Toner Plastics from Microcenter and it even feels different than the stuff that came with the printer.

I've been having the same problem. The filament I received wasnt consistent and my nozzle keeps getting plugged. Hope the new role from microcenter fixes the issue.

Re: Filament or Hot End?

I wouldn't say the filament is awful, as a newbie I was able to successfully print some fairly complex items without significant issues.  That being said, the Hatchbox filament I used seemed to cause fewer issues.
