Topic: Please Help! Extruder will not heat!

Hoping you guys can help diagnose my problem. I can get my press to heat up to 200C within a few minutes, but then it starts to level out and will not reach above 230C. If I let it set for 30min or so I can get close to 220 and then the temp will even out here within a few degrees.

My printer has been working great for a month or so but now this happens and solidoodle support is no help...

Do you have extra fans added on the extruder ?

Fat kids are harder to kidnap!

Yes, but I have been running the extra fan for months without issue.

Is your power supply firmly plugged in? Is your heater & thermistor snug in the block? Does the printer config menu show you're at 100% heating?

If so, look for a loose connection or damaged wire. Otherwise, get out a voltmeter and see where the voltage to the heater is dropping.

Re: Please Help! Extruder will not heat!

Here is what I've done so far:
- I have a spare heater, so I switched that out
- The glass on the thermistor was cracked, so I replaced that
- Double checked all the connections

I just finished wiring it all up and the extruder is now heating. We shall see what happens...

And it now tops out at 200

Re: Please Help! Extruder will not heat!

whats your max temp in repetier's (assuming thats what youre using) printer settings?

Re: Please Help! Extruder will not heat!

I've tried Soliprint and that maxes out at 200. If I set the max in RH to 250 I can get to about 210-220 after 20 min

Maybe your firmware has a MAX TEMP limit set?

Re: Please Help! Extruder will not heat!

The heater voltage at the motherboard measures 22.8. At the connector to the heater it measures 22.5 while heating. On the leads next to the heater reads 21.5.

Where is the best place to check this?

Any Ideas?
Can anyone tell me how to check the MAX TEMP setting in the firmware?

Re: Please Help! Extruder will not heat!

I missed the fact this was a press issue. I dont believe you have access to the firmware on a press.

Re: Please Help! Extruder will not heat!

Is that an SD thermistor or at least one appropriate for table 1 of Marlin?

If you're cranking 21.5v at 100% dutty, your choices are pretty much:
1) it's a temperature misread (wrong thermistor?) and you're droooling/cooking filament (btw, can you extrude ABS at your 200?)
2) the heat isn't getting from heater to thermistor (thermistor fully inserted and heater snug?)
3) little heat - the heater is failing (fatigued wired somewhere, either internal or at insulation)
4) the heat is getting sucked away the heater (thermally shorted to the extruder? which would be getting really warm. Or one whirlwind of a fan pointed at the heater block)
