I received the kit today

I will mill the slit, polish the nipple ID and put it together this weekend.
I am thinking of covering  the nipple (after wrapping) with heatshrink tubing

Nice! I think the heatshrink would work fine, as long as it didn't touch the pipe. I included two hoppers in your kit, just in case one gets broken or mangled before your SD3 gets to you.

elmoret, you show me the funnel in your photo.. not hopper.. this is what i have with hopper v2.. see photos

Hmm, I guess the names are switched. I'll fix that, too.

take my speech with a grain of salt and open the stl and double-check them to put the proper name as english is not my primary language.. perhaps i make a mistake in my translation...

Parts showed up today. Should have it up and running by sometime tonight.

My kit arrived! What a nice birthday present, good timing. Unfortunately I won't be able to put it together until this weekend, but when I get just a little free time I'll be joining the cool kid self-filament-making club and get to the experimentation.

Re: Filament Extruder - Convert pellets to filament

New funnel idea. So I messed around to see what I could come up with.  This design needs a little bit of work still but it's pretty much done.  I didn't like that the bottom of the original funnel was flat which would cause pellets to accumulate in the bottom. Thoughts...

Re: Filament Extruder - Convert pellets to filament

Looks nice, I bet the square design prints faster than the round one as well.  Then we can make "funnel extender" square piece to connect on top of this, which can be printed multiple times and clipped on top of each other.  This will allow people to extend their filament production by 3-4 hour chunks.

I like the idea of being able to add a section. ill mess with it some more next week. It printed fast but needs thicker walls (minor layer separation from warping).

Re: Filament Extruder - Convert pellets to filament

You're approaching the crosssectional area where the pellets will not feed due to gravity - they will clump up and block sooner than you think. It's probably fine, but just a heads up. smile

Cool idea!

I'm betting the vibrations from the machine will keep that from happening.

well i picked up my pellets and they were delivered today i was confused as hell when the collor red came as small packs and realised i had to mix the colors myself

It didn't in my case. smile

I'm not saying it won't work, just passing my experience.

Re: Filament Extruder - Convert pellets to filament

What crossectional area is that?  Too tall, to wide, to big a difference between the wide part and narrow part?  I'm working on a masterbatch doser which should be able to dispense a pellet at a time.  Preventing jamming and clumping will be important for that.

440

Re: Filament Extruder - Convert pellets to filament

Anything with a interior dimension under 0.5" is prone to it. I had a funnel that was 0.5" in diameter, 1 inch tall, and it jammed continuously.

Re: Filament Extruder - Convert pellets to filament

do the washers belong on each side of the thrust bearing

442

Re: Filament Extruder - Convert pellets to filament

Which ones? The ones in the bag with the bearing? Yes, they're the bearing faces.

Re: Filament Extruder - Convert pellets to filament

I took a look at the v2 instructions.   I feel left out smile  As I missed v2 beta by a few days, but since I'm in Canada it probably would not have been practical with the final release so close!

Anyway.  I've posted this amazing device over at the Makerbot Operators Google group (since Makerbot Owners don't actually have a "real forum")

Since I can't post URLs yet:
A google search "Filastruder makerbot google groups" should pick it up once Google indexes that group smile

Haha the title of my post is:
Filastruder - A real pellet extruder - unlike the "Filabot"

lol

Re: Filament Extruder - Convert pellets to filament

What is the speed at which your 3d printer extrudes plastic while printing?  I know that your filastruder outputs 20"/ min. Could this concept be directly integrated into a hotend that replaces the one on the solidoodle?

I know it is more complicated but sounds feasible... thoughts?

446

Re: Filament Extruder - Convert pellets to filament

Here's an email I just sent out with some more info on assembly. I'll work this into the instructions:

Home now! A couple things:

When you assembled the auger and set the motor on base, the auger should have been slid all the way back, up against the flange, so the thrust bearing was compressed together. Was that the case? If not, then the auger will travel back once it starts rotating, as the pressure from the compressed plastic pushes it towards the motor. If there's a gap, it will push the motor backwards, which will cause the coupling to rise up. Does that make sense? I'll revise the instructions to ensure that does' happen again to others.

On the PID:
There a LED in the top left corner. When this is on, the heater is producing heat.
The top row of numbers is the current temperature, in degrees celsius. What is this showing when you first turn it on, and when the heater starts cycling?
The bottom row is the set point, which is changed by pressing "set", then the arrow keys, then pushing "set" again.

The peak speed of the Solidoodle extruder is around 0.5"/second, of 1.75mm filament. Thats in the same ballpark as the Filastruder.

Couple of issues:
- You can't put a pellet extruder on the printhead. It's way too heavy, even if I redesigned it with weight in mind.
- Pellet extruders can't retract. So, even if you put it next to your printer with a Bowden tube feeding the hot end, you could never retract, or reliably control extrusion speed
- If you leave the extruder stepper, and just feed it from the Filastruder, than might work - but it would be difficult to match the feed rates so that there wasn't a surplus or shortage of filament.

Re: Filament Extruder - Convert pellets to filament

Ok, I'm with Ben.  Just arrived here and just finished reading 18 pages.  Please put me down for one in the next batch, and when do you think that might be?  (Not expecting soon, sure you need feedback from the last batch first.)  Off to read the instructions now.

Done!

I'd hope in a couple weeks - whenever I start hearing from the beta guys!

Speaking of, has anyone from the second round gotten theirs up and running yet?
