Topic: Folger Tech Kossel Unboxing and First Impressions (Pic Heavy)

Well, guys, I said I'd do it and I did it!

Yesterday my mom gave me a kossel kit from Folgertech for my birthday. This was amazing considering I didn't think she could have actually ordered it given the amount of time I heard Folger takes to put boxes together. Props to my mommy big_smile

Anyway, first impressions. I noticed, even through the wrapping paper, that the box was distinctively... lumpy? Yeah, lumpy is a good word. It had obviously taken a beating in transit. Picture is from after my mom resquared the box a bit so she could wrap it:

http://i.imgur.com/GYRMraA.jpg

Tip for Folger Tech: Put foam peanuts or the like inside to add some density and help avoid crushing.

Inside, most components were shipped in assorted shipping envelopes. Threaded rod, carbon fiber tubes, and aluminum extrusions were taped in bundles and thrown in without any foam or bubblewrap. Some of the things I saw gave me cause for concern. First thing that threw me off was the packing list:

http://i.imgur.com/mmF4AtQ.jpg

Tip for Folger Tech: Crossing off the packing list with black permanent marker makes it REALLY hard for the customer to know what's supposed to be in their box.

Going through the box, I found that there was a white plastic shipping bag that listed all the different screws, bearings, washers, and t slot nuts it contained. Opening the bag revealed this:

http://i.imgur.com/cDtILr6.jpg

about an hour later, I had it rearranged to this:

http://i.imgur.com/4UmfSmM.jpg

Tip for Folger Tech: Little baggies are really cheap and would make it easier for people to figure out what/if they are missing. Hell, that box I put all the screws in was literally $3 at Harbor Freight. I know you shop there. It's where you buy your super glue.

Acrylic stuff was all thrown in a (non padded) white envelope together, but seems no worse for wear. One thing I did notice is that the edges of the acrylic has visible stepping from the laser. They need to slow down their feedrate or increase the power output on the laser to get a nice edge finish. The laser slows down for contours, so the smaller rounded pieces are perfect. It's just the straightaways they need to fix. Don't know if Folger Tech makes their own acrylic or if they job it out. If they part it out, they should probably talk with the company doing the work. It's a little nitpicky (i doubt many other people would notice/care), but I used to install and service large laser cutters and any customer I worked with would have strangled me if I left their edge quality like that. I guess they just want to go fast and make parts as quickly as possible.

http://i.imgur.com/LG8ln3z.jpg

Electronics were in their own padded envelope all together, and I was actually really impressed. Every component is sealed in its own anti-static bag and all of the stepper drives have foam stuck on the pins so they don't get bent out of shape. It didn't look like anti-static foam, which is a little worry some, but I doubt it is harming anything.

http://i.imgur.com/VFd3pPK.jpg

Printed parts were stuffed in a ziploc bag with no padding and thrown in the box.

http://i.imgur.com/vqmKIfI.jpg

A padded envelope contained odds and ends, including the servo for the auto-bed leveler. I am pretty worried that they just throw in the super glue without putting it in its own baggie. The tube is pretty beat up and I could easily have seen it popping in transport. I would rather they just didn't ship one than ship one that could explode and get everywhere. At least don't put it in with bearings and motors.

http://i.imgur.com/5oiw1m0.jpg

Stepper motors were shoved in a broken off piece of white expanded shipping foam and wrapped in bubble wrap. All things said, it was a pretty solid wrapping job and I have no issue with the way they were packed.

http://i.imgur.com/1IOhu1M.jpg

Lastly, there was one piece of damage I have found (thus far). The power supply was thrown in with everything else in the box, and the corner got banged up pretty bad. It should bend back, but I am going to want to do a thorough check of the thing to make sure it didn't take any internal damage.

http://i.imgur.com/jET4HMU.jpg

Overall opinion on shipping? Absolutely terrible. I am honestly surprised that nothing in there is broken. I was sure when I found the bag with the acrylic pieces I'd just be pouring out powder.

Overall opinion on product thus far? Actually, pretty good. The arduino it comes with is name brand, all the 2020 extrusions seem to be cut accurately, fit is alright. I only have the base assembled thus far and the base brackets were absolutely ugly on the bottom:

http://i.imgur.com/0gH0mV6.jpg

But they actually feel solid. I'm hoping they hold up okay and don't delaminate on me when I have everything screwed in. I learned my lesson from the 'doodle; first real prints after everything is set up is going to be a new set of brackets.

More pics and opinions to follow as the project progresses!

Re: Folger Tech Kossel Unboxing and First Impressions (Pic Heavy)

Congrats on the great birthday gift!

our Prusa kit arrived yesterday, and the unboxing was pretty similar, altho most of our stuff was in bubble wrap type plastic bags. but yeah, all of the hardware in one large bag - took a fair amount of sorting to determine if it was all there...

Anything missing from your kit? Ours is missing the M5 threaded rod for the Z axis. sad being a newer kit, maybe it was just overlooked? waiting to hear back from Folgertech now...

(edit: missing threaded rods found! taped to the underside of the aluminum bed plate... tongue )

Nothing missing that I can find so far. Since they crossed off the packing list with a permanent marker I pretty much have to just play it by ear while I follow the instructions. I will work on it more tonight and will update the thread as the news comes in.

When you go to print out the various parts, make sure you check the STL files over good - I started printing the bed bearing carriers for mine and there are some issues with the file - nothing that will make them unusable, just kind of funky looking... the screw holes print with jagged perimeters & there is an odd spot on one outer wall... they should still work fine, even with the oddities, but I will be checking the rest carefully before printing them

This is a delta, there are no bearings on the bed. The bed is fixed with acrylic parts that cannot be printed.

heartless is using the prussa kit from the same company, so we have been comparing the prussa to the kossel a bit. She meant the ones on her kit.

I bought the FT kossel kit when they first released it. Hopefully they changed the screws that secure the acrylic to 10mm as I advised them. Otherwise be prepared to head to the hardware store. The 6mm they supllied in mine are too short to go through the acrylic and thread far enough into the t-nut to be secure. They said they would update the kits.

Ran into my first problem. One of the linear bearings grinds terribly and doesn't move freely. Pretty much unusable. Sent an email to folgertech, let's see how quickly I get some help.

Re: Folger Tech Kossel Unboxing and First Impressions (Pic Heavy)

Update: got a reply, they want me to use the bearing and see if it works its way in. If it doesn't, I have to send it in for evaluation. No way in hell am I putting it on the machine. It barely moves and will most likely damage other components. As soon as I figure out how to properly compress video off my phone I'll post it.

Edit: Video attached. Ignore my fat fingers.

Wow - I think I would send them that video and show them just how bad it is. Get pushy about it, tell them you wont recommend thier product to anyone, and in fact, will give bad reviews if they don't make it right... They can still get the bearing back and evaluate it, but they really need to send you a new one.

They seem to be gettinganal since their sells went up. But those linear rail assemblies are not cheap. They go for around 45 bucks each on ebay.

I had a misdrilled piece of acrylic they offered to replace with. No question. I'm curious did they get rid of the 6mm long screws and replace them with 10mm as I advised? I bought the second one they sold so I was sort of a test run for them. I found some issues and alerted them and they said they would be fixed on future builds.

Re: Folger Tech Kossel Unboxing and First Impressions (Pic Heavy)

They got in touch with me again today, they are going to send me a new car that they have (sans rail) since I know how to transfer them without getting bearings everywhere. Very polite getting back to me, just asked for a shipping address. I did email them the video as well so it may have helped. I get the feeling a lot of people complain about the rails that come in so they use a stock response to weed out the people who don't actually have a problem..

All in all, I don't really blame them for wanting me to throw it on the machine and try it. I'm sure they get a lot of people saying that the rails don't run smoothly, since even my "smooth" ones don't feel nearly as nice as some NSK linear bearings or similar. You can see bubbles in the edges of the casting on the bad car.... really they just went with the cheap rails that 99% of the rostock community uses and I happened to get a bad one. My "good" bearings sound a lot better now that I've greased them and run them back and forth a few times by hand while I watch TV.

I have looked into the bad bearing car more, on the inside of it there was a sizeable burr. I cleared it out by gently running a #36 drill bit through it by hand, but it still didn't run smooth. Looks like the main problem is that the plastic end cap doesn't line up properly with the steel, resulting in another lip I will have to deal with. Tempted to keep working at it, but I know that it's not worth my time if they're sending me a new bearing. Hopefully I'll have it by the weekend. If I had the free time at work, I'd throw it on a mill and put a slight chamfer on it to see if that lets the balls flow better in both directions. Judging by the burr location and what not, it could be that the hole is misaligned as well.

Glad to hear they are sending you a new one. (and sorry you are having problems with yours)

Interested in seeing how the rest of this goes together once you get the new bearing. the other half said last night that the next one should be a kossel. LOL (gonna have to rearrange the room before that happens, tho - not enough space as it is!)

Re: Folger Tech Kossel Unboxing and First Impressions (Pic Heavy)

Update: new bearing slider came in yesterday, works very well. Continued the build only to find that the effector was printed slightly too small and I can't fit the hot end in place because of it. I am going to forge ahead and see if I can pare it down enough to get working. Between that and the horribly printed extruder bracket, I think I will just have to get this printer running g as best I can until I have something working well enough that I can print better parts.

Edit: oh, and those bed screws loom to be 8mm. I will have to find my calipers to be sure.

My extruder mount was acrylic and cracked the moment I tightened the screw on the motor. I printed one to replace it.

I mistyped. Not the extruder bracket, the hot end bracket. The extruder bracket is acrylic, and didn't crack when I tightened the motor. I was worried that it would, though.

Re: Folger Tech Kossel Unboxing and First Impressions (Pic Heavy)

Sorry to hear you are having so many problems with the kossel kit. One would think that since it has been out longer it would be a bit more refined than having parts that dont fit right.. hmm

the 2020 Prusa kit went together pretty easily - granted, I did reprint all the plastic parts in the color of our choosing, so didnt use any of the printed parts it came with other than the bed belt attachment piece - that one didnt print so well... and it has since been replaced with one that can be adjusted for belt tension.

here is hoping that the rest of the build goes smoothly!

Re: Folger Tech Kossel Unboxing and First Impressions (Pic Heavy)

At this point, I'm about 80% done with the build. There isn't much left that can go wrong, so I'm happy there.

The problem with the effector being slightly undersized (aside from having to tap all the bolt holes) is that it has a countersink for the hotend to fit in and it doesn't. Because of that, the hotend is only held straight by the little bit of pressure applied around the rim where the countersink is too small. It should hold fine for now, but like I said it will have to be reprinted as soon as the printer is running.

Also of note is that I can't for the life of me get the top of the machine to actually fit on. The extrusions simply won't fit in their slots. I only fussed with it for about 30 minutes last night, and today I'll file down the inside corners and see if maybe it's just some brim from the printing. A lot of the printed pieces are really messy on the interior.

Still, speaking honestly, I would buy this kit in a heartbeat. The problems I've had haven't been too significant, and once they understood the bearing car problem they were quick to send a replacement. If I had my SD3 working, I'd probably have reprinted all of the parts in ABS anyway and wouldn't have noticed this problem in the first place. For the cost, you get a pretty solid kit with a name brand boardset.

Now that the thing is starting to come together, I'm getting excited!

Re: Folger Tech Kossel Unboxing and First Impressions (Pic Heavy)

I just ordered this kit based on advice that Tin Falcon gave me.

The problems that you've described sound like the result of them making this kit so damn cheap. If I have to fiddle with parts to make them work just right that seems justified. I can tell you that assembling the very large and expensive Airwolf 3d XL (at work, not my machine) was not perfectly printed either and the instructions were terrible. However, my work got it at a discount because it is discontinued and I think they had to last minute throw in some different parts to make it work. However, in 2 days I managed to get it all assembled (had to drill/dremel some things to get them to fit) but it worked perfectly on the first try!

Anyway, I will definitely post here when I get my Folgertech Kossel and let y'all know about how it goes. Although it might be a while, since I'm in Canada, and the shipping will take a while. I'm hoping not too long... I'm so excited I spent about 6 hours last night bookmarking things I want to print on Thingiverse XD

Re: Folger Tech Kossel Unboxing and First Impressions (Pic Heavy)

The only real problem I've had that was insurmountable by me thus far was the bad bearing car. I still have the old one, and might throw it in a bridgeport at work and see if I can ream out the problem spots so I have a spare.

My advice is to pick up one of those little divider boxes like I have to sort the screws when they come in. The build would be an absolute nightmare without that stuff being sorted properly. Also check if you have a small rubber mallet since some of the brackets seem to be "persuasion fit" wink
