Topic: Solidoodle 2x2 (dual bowden extruder)

Got a bit further today and think its time for a own thread.

I will do a write-up of the process I have used when I get the quality of the mod that I want.

At the moment this is more of a teaser, showing what is going on:

I did my first test print and quickly realized I have allot of tuning in front of me. At least both the bowden feeders and hotends are doing what they should now.

Parts list this far is:
2x j head hotends (some cheep once for testing)
2x airtripper bowden extruders with nema 17 motors. Modified mounts and to have quickfit tube connectors. Will upload stl:s.
J Head hotend adapter and top to lock the heads inplace, stls:s will come

Re: Solidoodle 2x2 (dual bowden extruder)

A hearty thank you for pushing this tech forward.  I appreciate the hard work going into it.  Can't wait to see more.

Re: Solidoodle 2x2 (dual bowden extruder)

The road this far is filled with good ideas that didnt work. I´m the most upset about not getting the direct driven extruder to work, it was too heavy to move around, but this is really the way I want to go...

Re: Solidoodle 2x2 (dual bowden extruder)

What's the small gearmotor (+encoder, it seems?) in the background there? Sounds like a great experiment.

Did you at any point design a mount compatible with the existing carriage, for a single bowden extruder? I'd be really curious if you'd be willing to release an stl for that.  I'm even more interested in a single bowden extruder than a double. But i admire the work you're putting into a double bowden extruder!!

When you say it was too heavy to move around, do you mean like the motor was skipping on you? If that's the case you could try turning up the motor power. I have turned my trimpot up to .5 for the extruder without any issues so far. And decreasing the tube's bend angle helped a lot in my setup. Can't wait to see this thing in full action!

Also, are those the same sized extruder motors that the doodle currently uses now? I was curious if that airtripper's bowden design for the motor fit the doodle's extruder motor or not.

He means the print carriage became too heavy to move around. You can't turn those motors up any further, especially the x-axis.

The motor should fit since it is a NEMA 17, so what I had been wondering is if the Solidoodle' extruder gear fit the Airtripper design, or if some modification would need to be made due to a slightly different diameter.

Re: Solidoodle 2x2 (dual bowden extruder)

Yes, since the extruder gear is a mk 7 it fits really nice. Airtrippers extruder is set up for a mk 7 gear or qu-bd´s raptor gear.
I wouldnt go for the extruder motor although it fits, a fullsized more powerfull nema 17 motor doesnt cost all that much.

My first print, the offset was alittle of though, but still pretty satisfied by the result Im getting

Good progress! What software packages are you using to slice and send data?

I use repetier Host for controlling and Slic3r for slicing. Havent figured out how to load more than one stl and make a multimaterial output in repetier directly, so I load them into slic3r (File-Combine multimaterial), then I load the created amf file into slic3r and slice it . The g code is then loaded into repetier and printed

Haven't set extrusion rate yet, so that's the next thing to calibrate since I´m quite sure the values for the j head and the bowden set-up is very different from the S2 once..

Pretty slick Rondavouz

Re: Solidoodle 2x2 (dual bowden extruder)

This is really impressive and exciting to follow. Keep up the great work.

Re: Solidoodle 2x2 (dual bowden extruder)

this is a nice setup! good luck on your calibrating and let us know how it goes.

ps which electric board are you using?

Solidoodle2 with Ceramic tile heated bed http://www.soliforum.com/topic/2544/my- … eated-bed/
"1kg should last for an while" is a lie!

I use Ramps 1.4 for electronics

You get a A in my book as well...this is f'ing sweet!!!

Re: Solidoodle 2x2 (dual bowden extruder)

Can you release more information about the bowden tube and connections you used? I'd be keen on adapting for a single extruder bowden setup.

The extruder is :
http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:44049
See description for original airtripper extruder for parts list.

the connectors are :
http://reprapworld.com/?products_detail … cPath=1616  ,both on extruder and hotend side.
Makes it possible to just push the tube into place, and get it out buy pushing down on connector while pulling tube.

the tube is:

On the hotend side, this is my design atm:

Re: Solidoodle 2x2 (dual bowden extruder)

You're the best!

-thanks.

Re: Solidoodle 2x2 (dual bowden extruder)

Are you using the extruder gear that came with the Solidoodle, or did you get a different one to fit the Airtripper?

22

Re: Solidoodle 2x2 (dual bowden extruder)

Can't wait to print water soluble support...thanks for taking the initiative to get dual extrusion working...a true SD hero!!!

Re: Solidoodle 2x2 (dual bowden extruder)

I actually havent stripped the original extruder, but I am using the mk7 extruder gear (that I bought separate), and that should be the same that is on the original extruder. So it should fit without any problem, you just need a support bearing at the end of the shaft.
The rapport gear that is used in the qu-bd extruder will also fit.

Re: Solidoodle 2x2 (dual bowden extruder)

Rondavous
This is amazing. Do you think that one extruder could print nylon and the other abs. The nylon is very resistant to acetone while abs will disolve it it. Conversly abs will disolve in kerosene but nylon will not. One could be dissolvable support for the other.
Keep up the good work.....
Thanks

Re: Solidoodle 2x2 (dual bowden extruder)

Calibrating, calibrating...

Starting to get quite good results on the calibration cube, but still have one problem:
When the extruder travels they keep producing alittle melted abs that is then but on the edge for the next material. If its the same extruer then its no problem, but if it for the other a blob is left at the edge.
Playing around with reduction ( although I know it works bad with a bowden setup), but this is my last problem to crack.
Bearing 608 zz are there just for size reference

If I dont turn on the second extruder I´m very pleased by the way it is printing with one extruder only also.
Printed a new idler that hold the bolts better, the blue part, and updated my thingiverse drawing
