Topic: 4123D's Solidoodle 4 Aluminum Rebuild

While it's only about 60% finished, it was suggested that I let the community check out our Sodildoodle 4 (will work with SD3 and possibly Workbench as well) redeisng and aluminum rebuild.

Firstly, all credit for the redesign and machining goes to 4123D team member Costin Apostolescu. This is simply not something we would have access to otherwise. While we do have three sets of pieces, the only machine we currently have rebuilt is his personal machine (SD4).

Anything that was originally 3d printed plastic (carriages, extruder mount, front pullet mounts, etc) has since been redesigned and replaced with milled aluminum parts. In addition all rods have been replaced with hardened steel rods and belts have been upgraded to precision belts. Where applicable, all screws are now M3 heads. Larger bolts, like the ones holding the front pulleys, have had channels milled into them to hold grease.

The small Y-axis belt has been eliminated and Y is now direct drive with the stepper mounted outside the frame on its own support which is bolted across the back of the printer. In addition, the rod for the Y axis is no longer supported by the frame but by bearing mounts attached to the back of the frame.

Plans for this week are to perfect the placement of the cable chains, and replace stock Solidoodle extruder and hot end with a Bulldog XL extruder and E3D Universal 1.75mm hotend. These should be here tomorrow.

Even further out are plans to replace Z-axis screw with a ball screw and completely redesign the bed platform.

At this time there are no plans to sell any of the parts, kits, or designs.

Care to post pictures of your direct drive mounting setup?

Sure, if I have some I definitely will. I didn't really focus on that this time around becuase it still contains plastic.

This look beautifull and very professional !

Only problem is this ugly hot end... IMHO a nice E3D will be so much better looking on your built !! ;-)

Keep on going, if you happen to sell a kit, I definitely would like to get a quote !

Hey! enough teasing ! Bring us the thing, and sell it!

I have a shapeoko 2, but eh, I  will need something else to machine those kind of beautiful parts...

Might need to wait for the shapeoko 234, sure...
