Topic: New e3d, but thermistor only reading about half temperature

Hi All,

I'm replacing my extruder with new e3d on my solidoodle 3. I got everything up and running, changed the firmware, but no matter which thermistor I picked, it would read about half the actual temperature...and wouldn't heat up enough...

Anyone seen this? Ideas?

Thanks
Dave

First off, the thermistor should be changed to 5 in firmware.
The thermistor wires are obviously very small and delicate. It is easy to cause a short. A simple way to check this is to move the wires around while connected and heating. If you get an error, that's the problem.

My dollar is on the firmware though.

Printit Mason and Printit Horizon printers
Multiple SD2s- Bulldog XL, E3D v5/v6/Lite6, Volcano, Hobb Goblin, Titan, .9 motor, Lawsy carriages, direct Y drive, fishing line...the list goes on
Filawinder and Filastruder #1870.....worth every penny!

Thanks!

I did try setting it to 5, even tried two thermistors...but I'll take another shot at it....

Check that...reverse it...it READS 215C, but the e3d is only about 100C, not the other way around.

How are you measuring the e3d? The only reliable way is with a contact thermometer, an IR thermometer will not work.

Jago is correct. Put the IR thermometer back in the drawer, and back away slowly.

Another question. What firmware build should I be editing? Which is the latest and/or greatest out there?

Thanks!

My recommendation would be to start with Adrian's version (search the forums for help and instructions - this has been done many times! And of course let us know if you run into trouble). It is already largely set up for a solidoodle, and is best understood around here - so will require the least fiddling around.

The current marlin development build has a few new features, but nothing much you'll miss on a solidoodle - I'd guess this is only worth playing with if you are patient and really feel like learning a bit more about the printer and the Marlin firmware. I've been successfully using this on a RUMBA (not the solidoodle board though!). Approach with caution.
