Topic: Filament

I am new to the forum and 3d printing i have been reading and watching for a few years now finally pulled the trigger on a new da vinci 1.0 and i hope i made the right choice, what has stopped me in the past was the issue with the cartridge having to buy them from xyz so here is my question i see all the spools and hacks for the cartridge but in a video on the xyz web site i see i can buy a spool from them load it in my old cartrige case it comes with a new chip to reset the counter and is only $28 bucks so is it worth buying the reset coder and other brand spools or am i missing something.

Re: Filament

From my own experience, I was happy buying cartridges until I needed black for a big project and couldn't find any. Then I realized how much cheaper other filament was not to mention a much greater variety. I got a bigger spool (1kg) of black from Microcenter and paid a whole $14 for it.

I found even opening the XYZ carts and replacing the spools and chips to be a PITA.

So, I purchased a cart resetter, installed Simplify3D and printed a spool holder. I don't regret it one bit.

What you have to understand with XYZ spools and carts is they contain 600g of filament for 28 bucks. While brands such as Midland which is Microcenters house brand for 15 bucks and of course Shaxon which is Frys  house brand for 25 bucks all contain 1kg. 1kg is the normal standard for third party brands. So you can go with XYZ if you want, but you are effectivly paying twice the market value for filament.

Re: Filament

Aside from being cheaper, many 3rd party filaments are also better quality IMHO.

Re: Filament

I'm running Simply3D with stock firmware (1.2.5). You just need to get rid of the XYZware out of your computer, you won't be using it anymore anyway.

Caveat: You will need XYZware if you intend on upgrading the stock firmware in the future though, it's not a separate download anymore.
