I'm running Simply3D with stock firmware (1.2.5). You just need to get rid of the XYZware out of your computer, you won't be using it anymore anyway.

Caveat: You will need XYZware if you intend on upgrading the stock firmware in the future though, it's not a separate download anymore.

While brands such as Midland which is Microcenters house brand for 15 bucks and of course Shaxon which is Frys house brand for 25 bucks all contain 1kg. 1kg is the normal standard for third party brands. So you can go with XYZ if you want, but you are effectivly paying twice the market value for filament.

From my own experience, I was happy buying cartridges until I needed black for a big project and couldn't find any. Then I realized how much cheaper other filament was not to mention a much greater variety. I got a bigger spool (1kg) of black from Microcenter and paid a whole $14 for it.

I found even opening the XYZ carts and replacing the spools and chips to be a PITA.

So, I purchased a cart resetter, installed Simplify3D and printed a spool holder. I don't regret it one bit.
