Topic: XYZWare refuses to load Simplify3D GCODE

I love Simplify3D but with complicated models the Da Vinci 2.0J resets itself 9 out of 10 uploads. Since the XYZWare can import GCODE from other slicers I tried to use it to print my model. When I imported the GCODE file XYZWare complained that the wrong printer was attached and it refused to print it.

What to do?

Re: XYZWare refuses to load Simplify3D GCODE

Simplfy3D is supposed to be able to connect to and drive XYZ printers directly. You should not even have to use the XYZ software anymore. That was the reason most went to S3D was that it directly supported the printer. I personally would never spend 150 bucks on just a slicer. it would have to run the printer as well.

Printing since 2009 and still love it!

Re: XYZWare refuses to load Simplify3D GCODE

The problem is that Simplify3D reboots the DaVinci while uploading large complicated GCODE.

Re: XYZWare refuses to load Simplify3D GCODE

Maybe a memory limitation? Are you shutting off and restarting the printer between prints?

I usually shut off and restart my machine after a long print.

I haven't experienced your issue and I've been using Simplify3d for a few months now.

From personal experience, here's how I fixed this problem:

On Simplify3d using a Mac, I found that using a different Baud Rate can often effect the transmission success rate of sending prints over. Simply try using a different Baud Rate such as 230400 it should work. smile

Re: XYZWare refuses to load Simplify3D GCODE

To load large files, you must:
1.  Set the Timeout to something in the area of 60 seconds, or more (it takes a long time to upload large files and will timeout with shorter time setting).  A most significant item to change!!!
2.  Set the Cache size to a large value (use 2047 if your computer has enough memory.) Also, a most significant item to change!!!  The value to use should be one less than what ever multiple of ram size you decide on; e.g. If 2048 bytes, then set it to 2047 bytes)
3.  Set the baud rate (depends on computer/transmitter).  Mine is set to the max.

The settings for 1 & 2 are changed in the Tools>Firmware via the menu-bar pull-down.  See attachment...

FYI - .STL files from the internet may have all sorts of issues.  Aside from the good or bad aspect of the model's design, the .STL file output from CAD programs enable setting the resolution/triangles.  A great design with a large number of triangles creates extremely small positioning steps, thus a very large file without an increase is part resolution.

This is XYZ's new firmware. They are trying to stop users from using 3rd party slicers. Look it up.

I'm glad that I never updated mine. Mine runs just fine the way it is now.

XYZPrinting are sure being aholes about this though. I love the hardware, got a real hate-on for the company now.

So the people that bought S3D for the printer because it was compatible are SOL if they update? Eek. I'm glad I moved off all that business a long time ago.

Re: XYZWare refuses to load Simplify3D GCODE

When I received my machine, I'd already read many posts so, darn near the first thing I did was remove the SDcard and copy the files as a backup.  When the usual auto updates started, I was able the blow away xyzware and restore the machine to original state.

I suspect there may be differences between the different revisions of the machine - my machine is 3DP01  (the first part of the serial number on back of machine).

For those interested, I'm attaching copies of the files on my SDcard (need to do it in two separate posts so, look for the second post).  I recommend:
1. Pulling your sdCard, making a backup of it
2. Blowing away all XYZ stuff on you computer
3. Try using the attached files
4. Use Netfabb Basic to repair files (does a much better job and much faster than repairing files in Simplify)
5. Use Simplify3D for printing

From day-one (several months ago), after doing the above and changing the Firmware timeout to 60 seconds and cache size to 2047 bytes (via Tools>Firmware>communication), I haven't had any problems - zero!  Everything works just as I would expect of a good product.

Re: XYZWare refuses to load Simplify3D GCODE

I believe you can still submit S3D gcode via SD card without problems. But its such a hassle to do if you don't have a sd card extender.

Galaxy, Those are just data files and sample demos. It has nothing to do with the firmware....

Re: XYZWare refuses to load Simplify3D GCODE

You may be correct. Certainly about the Sample/Gcode.  However, at least on my machine, if I try printing when any one of these files is missing from the sdcard (ad_check, FW_updgrade, machine_life or offline_print), the machine won't print.  Add the missing file back and all works well.  FW_updgrade is related to FirmWare upgrade.  I noticed on other sites that many other folks with a different machine production build do not have the FW or ad_check files...

Adding the files back did downgrade the firmware from 1.2.7  to 1.2.6

Also, I am able to use Gcode from both, Slicer and Simplyfy (and homemade gcode - I have a 3-axis CNC mill and know gcode).  I setup the slicer with some custom headers/info.  No problems.

Re: XYZWare refuses to load Simplify3D GCODE

Hi, I also can no longer use slic3r to get gcode and then import it to xyzware.  Stupidly, I let it upgrade to the new version of xyzware a few weeks ago and since I have had this problem.  Is there any way to revert back to the old version where gcode still works?  Or is there some modification I can make to the gcode that will let me get by this error message when I try to print after importing the gcode:

"You do not have proper printing material to print this file.(ABS1 is installed; 2 is required)

Please install compatible printing material or try other files."

Thanks for any help.  And, in case it matters, I have a da vinci 1.0, running Yosemite 10.10.2.

Re: XYZWare refuses to load Simplify3D GCODE

In my opinion, the upshot of the XYZ software and printer is, perhaps, best summarized as follows:

  • The printer is good, though the particular release dates may result in various problems that you may have read about (such as cracked bushing, dragging wire, bad connectors…etc).  I have had ZERO problems with mine (have had it 4 months and printed hundreds of hours on it now).

  • The XYZ software is good if you like out-of-the-box and user friendly. There is an advanced button that enables tweaking print parameters.

  • No need/reason to use slicer or gcode.

  • Download Netfabb basic to do .stl repairs (it’s better than using the XYZware to fix the file and it’s free)

If you want to go beyond the above, I recommend:

  • Completely deleting XYZware (use something like AppCleaner for your Mac - once deleted, you won’t be plagued by software/firmware updates)

  • Use Simplify3d for all your slicing, file repairing, printing and machine control needs (note: even though Simplify does file repair, I still prefer Netfabb for repairing - it’s faster and gives more control of the repair)

  • Use a cartridge reseter (such as Zerocart) to enable use of third-party filaments.

  • The only downside to this is the cost for Simplify and the cartridge resetter - but, they will pay for themselves via your saying goodbye to frustration and xyz’s propriatary software and firmware games

Re: XYZWare refuses to load Simplify3D GCODE

The models I print are too complicated for xyzware to slice with anything close to acceptable results.  And I don't think it is worth buying Simplify3D when I know that a free solution to my problem exists.  I appreciate your response though.  Thanks.

Hi Nick.

I solved this problem by adding this line to my gcode

; filamentid = 41,41

See my post in another thread if you want to know more about how I figured this out.

Re: XYZWare refuses to load Simplify3D GCODE

I was having the same problem, i.e. the XYZ Printer would reboot during the upload, particularly if I was printing large, complicated files. The problem seems to have been the CACHE size. As suggested by another user (galaxy99) I...
1) Set the cache to 2047
2) Set the baud rate to the max

Using a Mac OS X Version 10.10.3

22

Re: XYZWare refuses to load Simplify3D GCODE

This is an update on the reboot problem during upload.
I am using a Mac OS X ver 10.10.3
The problem seems to be related to the number of lines in the gcode. I use simplify3D to slice and generate gcode but the serial CACHE needs to be expanded to permit large, complicated models to be sent to the printer. My last model generated 117350 lines of gcode and I had to increase CACHE size to 8191 before it would upload without crashing.
You can access the cache through Tools>Firmware>Communication from the dropdown menu. Be certain that you have executed the 'Prepare to Print' in S3D otherwise you will not get the correct menu.
I do not think the baud rate has much to do with it unless things are too slow and it times out during the upload; but it can't hurt to max out the baud rate.

Re: XYZWare refuses to load Simplify3D GCODE

Forget all that other stuff that I said. I think correct answer is posted on the Simplify3D website by BAUDR8.
According to his interpretation of the problem, it arises during transmission of the CR/LF in the gcode file.
I think, every now and then, the printer processor misses a new line character '\n' and then two lines are
scrunched together and the thing crashes. The '\r\n' seems to fix the problem.

Below are his instructions for fixing the problem. So far, it has worked for me.

1) First, on the 'Machine Control Panel', set the 'BAUD Rate' to 250000.
2) Then under 'Edit Process Settings' go to 'Scripts' then 'Ending G-Code'.
3) After the last line, write {REPLACE "\n" "\r\n"} then click OK.
4) Then click on 'Prepare to Print', but don't print your model yet because the REPLACE has not been executed.
5) Instead of printing, Save the 'Toolpaths' to an SD Card or other memory location. This will make sure that
the post-processing scripts are run and the Replacements are made.
6) Then from the main menu, go to File>Preview Gcode File and choose the file you just saved.
7) Upload that file to the printer
8) Good Luck

Re: XYZWare refuses to load Simplify3D GCODE

my friend uses simplify3d on his makerbot.  He brought his laptop over to use on my davinci so i could try it out...  To check out comparable results against xyzware we printed the same model in PLA(a dickbutt), and it came out totally screwed... It is "ribbed" along its length and the eyes are just melted holes...  Any suggestion as to why this may be?  We loaded a new process and set PLA high as the default and switched printers but it looks like crap.
