Re: Need advice on how to handle a situation with Solidoodle

unbelievable!!!
How I said before I liked solidoodle but with this problem and the problems with the shipping delay on the printer as with the filament, is a very bad attitude.

Re: Need advice on how to handle a situation with Solidoodle

As frustrating as the situation is, I feel like they're making a solid effort to correct it. I think there was just a failure in communication between support and whoever ignored the RMA instructions. I can't blame that on the support person, but it is a fault in the company itself. They have since sent me an RMA with instructions for the receiving department to speak with the supervisor before any action is taken with the printer. Hopefully that ensures I don't receive it for a third time.

I would think the best way for them to ensure it doesn't happen a 3rd time would be to send you a new one before you send the old one back.

I swear I almost requested that, but I didn't want to argue with them. They're slow enough to respond as it is.

Re: Need advice on how to handle a situation with Solidoodle

Just got my replacement Workbench Apprentice in the mail today. I wasn't given any notice that it had shipped or a tracking number.

The first thing I did was check the back/serial number and thankfully this is not the one that was sent to me before. However, now this one is missing the tool kit, USB cable, and spool holder components. Guess I'll be contacting support again.

I also noticed that the power adapter is different. The one I originally got was a solidoodle branded metal enclosure and this one is just a generic black plastic brick. No biggie, but I thought the other one looked cooler.

I'm at work so I haven't been able to really inspect everything, but I'll probably post an update tonight after I've gone over everything.

Re: Need advice on how to handle a situation with Solidoodle

Had a chance to check it out a bit more at lunch. Noticed the bracket that holds y-axis belt rod (?) had two loose bolts. Could have happened in transport I suppose.

Also noticed that one of the little sleeves that goes over the extruders and covers the thermistor is missing. I'd probably have printing issues without it. It takes long enough as it is for the extruder to get up to temp, nevermind if the thermistor wasn't insulated.

I doubt you would have noticed any difference with or without the insulation.

I'm not an expert or anything, but I feel like the Y-axis carriage shouldn't be cracked like this.

Re: Need advice on how to handle a situation with Solidoodle

Right you are, you could use some acetone mixed with some ABS and brush it into the crack good.  Then clamp it together for a bit and it'll be stronger than if it weren't cracked.
The unfortunate reality is you need to decide whether or not you're willing to keep messing around with solidoodle or are you going to be willing to just mod the faulty parts so you can get to printing.

You can repair it to get back up and running. It is unfortunate that you have to do so out of the box, but unless you want to wait for them to ship a replacement carriage, this is the way to go.

If you want to send it back, it is understandable given your track record (this insane thread). I am sure they will work with you.
If you choose the modify/upgrade the carriages, I would gladly mail you some Lawsy carriages. All that would be needed on your end are LM8UU bearings and some elbow grease. There are at least a dozen constantly active users here that would be more than happy to walk you through the process.

It is shameful, and this is what happens when SD makes carriages at 30% infill hmm

EDIT: Another user told me they would also donate 4 LM8UU bearings to assist the carriage mod if you chose that route.

Re: Need advice on how to handle a situation with Solidoodle

To the OP (chancrescolex), you are not the only one, unfortunately.  I have had a very similar experience:

- ordered a Workbench in Oct. 2014 and two roles of filament

- received the printer in Feb. 2014 and no filament, no power cord, no instruction manual, with noticeable scratches on the metal body and the bed; unfortunately Solidoodle completely ignored me on the power cord, while only after two or three e-mails they finally told that they are out of filament stock, yet there was no prior notification.  Oh and my Workbench was somebody's return and a non-functioning POS.

There is a complete disconnect between order processing, shipping department and customer service.  On average it took them almost two weeks to reply to some of my e-mails, while ignoring others.

Sadly, the only reason I even found this forum was because I was looking to see if there are any Solidoodle (class action) lawsuits.  On a positive note I am glad I fund this forum.

Re: Need advice on how to handle a situation with Solidoodle

Holy cow! what a nightmare! I am so sorry you (or anyone) are having to go thru this for a 3D printer!

Solidoodle should be completely and thoroughly ashamed! mad

After reading thru this and all of headaches & frustration involved, I am kind of glad we got our SD4 used - we didn't have to try to deal with SD customer support (or lack thereof) and didn't feel bad about hacking/modding it.

FWIW, I could donate a couple of the LM8UU bearings to the cause as well... I have 2 spares. Would just need to know where to send them.

That's really nice of you guys. I might take you up on that offer, but first I want to see what Solidoodle support says. I'd prefer not to have to disassemble the whole printer if I don't have to. Plus I'm falling behind on school projects that I had intended to use this for.

Do you know if the lawsy carriages are compatible with the Workbench Apprentice?

Re: Need advice on how to handle a situation with Solidoodle

The printer was also shipped to me like this. Solidoodle QC is the biggest fucking joke.

Is fixing this as easy as sliding the lower roller thing up so that the two rollers squeeze the y-axis rod?

Re: Need advice on how to handle a situation with Solidoodle

That is just an adjustment you want it snug but not so much so that it binds.  Just loosen the bolts and squeeze the Teflon blocks till they touch the rod and tighten the bolts.  From what I have seen there is no reason the lawsy carriages won't work.  It would be easy to tell by just printing them and seeing if things line up.  The only real variable would be the distance apart of the rods.  Even if they used a different distance then that would just mean that a different extruder carriage would be needed.  I will offer this, If they don't work I will work with you personally to design new Left, Right and Extruder carriages that will work.  At this stage I have made more changes to lawsy's carriages than lawsy has.

Re: Need advice on how to handle a situation with Solidoodle

Wow, it is simply incredible that someone there didn't give extra attention to your order before sending it out the last time. I've held off saying or even thinking their support is a failure, but this really proves it. This company is not serious about the way they conduct support after purchase, and I feel truly sorry for anyone who is having to deal with them. I was talking with our tech coordinator the other day and we feel like a lot of these printers might've been better sent out as kits, the W and WA, because we almost had to disassemble the entire thing and start from scratch.

I've been following this thread since the start and finally decided to chime in. 3rd time is the charm they say, and it's obvious they don't want to charm you. If you can, I'd return it for a refund, but I imagine that might even be a massive hassle. If you absolutely need it, then take up the offer for a new carriage and I'm certain everyone can help with any troubles you run into getting it running.
