Topic: Replacement Glass Bed?

Hi all,

I managed to get a massive amount of actual cracks in the glass of the heated bed on my 1.0 (by shimming the sides of the glass in the frame to stop it from moving around, but must have left some shim under the glass, causing it to crack on the next print).

These cracks go all the way through the pane, so I will need to replace it, or place a new piece on top of what is there.

So, this raises a few questions:

  • Is a special type of glass required, or can I just go to my local aquarium and have them cut me one or two 210 mm square pieces (yes, it's easier for me to get to an aquarium than a glazier...)?

  • Can I simply place the new glass piece over the old, and recalibrate?

  • Is there an easy way to detach the heated bed from the broken glass, so I can fit the new piece (i.e does anyone know what glue is used to hold the pieces together, and what solvent will dissolve the glue without damaging the bed)?

  • Does the replacement glass need to be glued to the new bed, or is it enough to just sit it on top and keep it secured with the screws?

Any and all advice greatly appreciated.

I replaced my factory bed about a month ago and the new glass is awesome. I think you're better off replacing the whole unit (glass and heater) because the way the heater is affixed to the glass means you would destroy it trying to separate it from the glass.

The replacement takes about 45 minutes. You can see my pics of the replacement in the thread I linked above.

Thanks for your response.  I did see this post, but I am in Australia, so shipping from the U.S. is prohibitive, and expecting the glass to still be intact on arrival I feel is wishful thinking (having learned this lesson from previous overseas purchases involving glass...).

I might just have to bite the bullet, and spring for a new heater and bed from XYZ.

This budget ($650 AU) printer is turning out to be very expensive.  I have had to replace two extruders (one at my own cost), and do some rewiring and soldering (none of which I had the tools for, originally).  The printer is less than six months old, mind you, but I have somehow voided my warranty, despite having used nothing but stock firmware and filament.

Still, it's a great machine, when it works.  smile

I did read somewhere where someone actually did manage to remove the heated bed intact from the glass, but can't find that post now.

So all, back to my original questions - any help, please?

Just a heads up a guy on voltivo sells borisillate glass heated beds. They are awesome, I ordered one myself I think its 55$

Alternative borosilicate/ceramic glass supply.

The original glass on my DaVinci 1.0A pitted in several places when I removed a part.

Under warranty, XYZ printing  sent a new glass and heater for me to assemble. The cost would have been €50 for the glass and €50 for the heater according to the customs declaration.

Instead of using the glass provided which was just an ordinary pane of glass costing £0.50 at my local glazier I decided to replace it which a borosilicate/ceramic glass.

Eventually got a borosilicate/ceramic glass from a heating stove supplier - these heaters have a glass window so that one can see the fire and therefore it can withstand high temperatures.

My local glazier cut it to size, though Youtube has videos on how to cut borosilicate glass - which looks easy :-) but I didn't want to risk it.

The assembly is now working well in my printer with no pitting.

Glass cost was £31.50.

Can the 1.0A glass bed be installed into a da vinci 1.0.

The wiring looks a little different but surely they are connected to the machine the same.

Does anyone know the part No for the Da vinci 1.0 stock glass bed.

For the record, I received a package from Kogan today.

Contents were: 1 piece of glass, and one heated bed with wires and connectors for the main board.

The heated bed has adhesive on one side, and a paper cover protecting said adhesive.

It was a simple matter to swap out the old and replace with the new, but I did manage to get the heated bed off-centre when I attached it to the glass.  The bed does not overlap the edges of the glass, but it is close on one side.

Further, once the adhesive meets the glass, that's it - there's no chance of removing and repositioning the bed on the glass, so if you go this route, do so with care!

Doing a print now, to see if it works OK.  This bed seems to heat faster than the original, but is still slow when compared to how fast the extruder heats up.

Beds will always heat slower regardless of type or design.  Just simple difference in surface area being heated.  Just for the record and to cut out another source of jams,  never hear the bed and extruder at the same time.  Doing so will allow the extruder to sit at full temp for 5 minutes or more cooking the filament inside.  When this happens the filament gets hard to push out.

Heat your bed first and when it gets within 30 degrees of the set temp,  then heat your extruder.

Thanks for the heads up. I didn't realize I had to stick the heater to the glass myself.

Could be tricky I'll be careful.

I think I will measure the heater and the glass and

whatever the difference is I will tape off a border on the glass as a guide for lining up the heater

while sticking it down. If that make any sense ?

You guys should be able to apply the heater like they do window film.  Just put soapy water in a spray bottle wet the glass with it then put the heater film down the water should keep it from sticking right away and allow you to position it.  Then just let it dry for 24 hours.

Great ideas from both Rob and Carl.

Thanks to those that contributed to this thread.

And for the record, I've now completed two prints.  Using only uhu glue in a thick layer for adhesion, both prints have come out fine, without warping issues I was getting from the previous plate.

Also, I cleaned the glass off with a new safety razor after the second print.  Previously, the glue would break up, and come off in tiny, little, annoying dried pieces, that went everywhere.  This time, however, the glue came of in a single piece, to the point that I was able to grab one bit, and pulled the remainder off the bed, leaving the bed nice and clean (I cleaned it with water anyway,to remove any remaining residue).

I'm starting my third print as I write this, and have just realised that it is taking a very long time to start.  Looked over, and the extruder isn't heating up.  I really must revisit the fix I made when the original connector fell apart due to the heat being put out by the extruder - the connector literally disintegrated in my hand when I checked it to see what the problem was...

I have the same problem. The first layer printing gets ruined as the nozzle gets caught on the grooves in the glass.

Before I try a replacement I will try to bring scrape out any cracking overhang, and try to fill the glass with some glass crack filler, if that exists. Could it be some high temp epoxy?

The glass is only going to continue to crack and chip regardless of what you do.  The glass is just ordinary plate glass like you would find in a picture frame. It is not designed for the temps and temp changes we are subjecting it to. It should be tempered glass or boroglass which is borosilicate glass that is used for cooking. Sometimes called Pyrex.

The problem is if it actually cracks it could damage the heater and just putting a piece of boro on top like I did would be useless. I plan to get a real heated bed and put the plate of boro glass I have on top of it.

Printing since 2009 and still love it!

I have often wondered why we use glass as the heated bed.

Would an aluminium plate not be just as effective and also heat up quicker?

Or are there other issues I am not aware of with that?

A lot of printers use the Aluminum Bed, and some prefer it. They conduct heat better than glass. Glass on the other hand is cheaper (especially the soda-lime glass that is used as the stock bed)

i have attempted to fill the gouges with high temp epoxy. J B Weld is the local brand at jaycar's.
Here is the bed scrapped to get the filling level. Putting the edge to my eye I cannot detect any warping.

I think the situation is gouging of poor quality glass that has flawed glass. No cracking as such, rather gouging and then flake chipping off that. The gouging is then you have a badly misaligned bed.

I have seen the induction prox sensor and will be going for that (no need for bed leveling) on future machines.
