Topic: Printer Ran For 3 Seconds Then Power Supply Sparked

Hi

I'm in Australia and I ordered my printer back in December. Well I finally got my printer delivered. I went to set it up following the instructions online. I got to the stage of plugging it in and I didn't realise that the power pack was switched on and set to 230V.

The printer turned on for 3 seconds, lights came on, a motor turned on, then the power pack made a little spark out the back and the printer turned off. I think I may have blown a fuse in the power pack because of the wrong voltage?

Now the printer wont turn on at all when the voltage is set to either 150V or 230V.

Any advice on what may have gone wrong and how I can fix it? Maybe I need to purchase a new 12V power pack that's designed for Australian power supplies?

Is there anyone from Australia on the forum that can provide advice on what they use?

What kind of printer?

It does sound like a fuse that may be replaceable if you're lucky and can find it.

Others will need to jump in to help with Aussie power supplies - a power supply upgrade is typically not a bad idea anyway.

Firstly, the 230V switch setting is correct for Australia, and should work fine. We're really not that special. smile It sounds like your power supply had a fault on arrival; should not have done that. I think you need to start by calling solidoodle support, and following their advice. I would expect that they should replace your power supply.

It's worth noting that not all power supplies have a voltage input switch, but those that do have to be correctly set BEFORE plugging into the wall (whether any switch on the unit is on or off).

I would caution against digging inside the power supply to try and fix it unless you already know what you're doing. Similarly, a third-party (e.g. eBay...) replacement will usually involve connecting mains power to screw terminals, and covering this all up safely - again, depends on whether you're comfortable/experienced with this. If so, I'm sure we'll happily help you through confirming you've picked something with the right specs etc. smile

If it sparked then it is dead, fuses don't spark. They may flash but will not make sparks come out of a unit. It blew a cap or several caps and maybe some diodes. Your best course is to get an RMA if you are sure the voltage settings was right before you plugged it in. This would rule out your doings as RMA departments try to pin the user to avoid paying cost on parts. I am an RMA tech for an Electronic Sub-contractor so I know how RMA departments think. Or just replace it with some thing from ebay that can supply the same or more current.
