Topic: DSLR Videography - Follow Focus Ring

I work in video production for the most part and have been printing tools for this field. Here is a follow focus ring I printed today based on RedRock Micro's design. I won't be able to test it for a few days but the gears roll evenly with the original and it feels the same. The model isn't complicated but that's not the point, it works. More and more pleased with my SD2 with every new project.

Unfortunately this is where I want to monetize my printer, printing photo/video accessories. I've been working on smaller things like battery covers and holders that you either can't buy separate from the battery or don't exist. This is the largest functional item I've done so far. I got to use it today on a shoot and it worked fantastic.

I hope you realize that Redrock Micro holds patents on almost all of their stuff. I would tread lightly ripping their tech off and re-selling it (its a great way to get sued). However, printing copies for yourself at home should be ok...which brings me back to my first question...

Re: DSLR Videography - Follow Focus Ring

I would not personally gloat about patent infringement either (if that's the case).   I kinda doubt that this specific item has a valid patent on it, nevertheless I would take caution and I would expect that  if your statement's here if ever recovered could be used in court against you.

A exact copy is one thing....taking other's ideas and reworking it into something equal or better is clever, productive and ultimately innovative vs. lazy, abusive, and thoughtless...I could harp all day on intellectual property thieves, but it is fairly easy for me to generate new random and innovate things...so I could just be speaking based upon these egocentrically derived thoughts.

This is a gear, and this use of a gear is not the only one of it's kind. But sorry, not posting an STL on this.

I am all for helping the community with things specific to the printer as I have done.

Seriously? That's what you think? Wow. That's what I get for showing off a tool's usefulness beyond a being just a new thing.

I make one test print and you make accusations all over me. Thanks for assuming that I won't rework or innovate, calling me a thief, and all your other assumptions. Yeah I'm done here. Nice work pal. You boys enjoy your little printer party.

I believe their patent is on the way it grips the lens. Not on the gear itself.

Re: DSLR Videography - Follow Focus Ring

I thought I was being insightful and helpful, albeit a bit harsh just as my profs were on me about this situation...I certainly would want someone who has been educated in copyright/patent law to speak up if I was blatantly displaying my infringements of other's intellectual property risking possible litigation by stating a desire to monetize someone else's work... maybe your login name should should have been BigDouche....btw if you have a issue personally with what I am saying...I don't hide behind screen names...look me up bro...you can learn about my more physical hobbies.

Re: DSLR Videography - Follow Focus Ring

I am sad that a discussion about an amazing design and print has become a source of hurt feelings.  I loved his original print.

I agree.

I like his design, and i understand that he won't share it with others atm.

Theres no point in being negative on this forum.

Even if theres a patent on it, i wouldnt really care at all.. theres patent on almost every stupid thing in this world.

BigHache you are more than welcome on this forum, like everyone else that enjoy the printer smile
