I had a severe clog on my workbench nozzle
after removing it and trying to be so carefull, indeed the thermister came loose.
Not sure what the black material is, anybody know? or what to use to reattach?
the thermister is fine, no broken wires.
can someone tell me if the nozzle is also threaded into the black sleeves that fit into the roller area?
I may need to completely remove the nozzle from the heater.

you can reattach it with kapton tape, the black stuff is probably just heat shrink tubing. make sure your reattachment is solid and appropriately stress relieved. a loose thermistor is a serious fire hazard

jagowilson - it appears there is only one thermister for both hotends - does that seem right?
does this mean that both hotends need to be on even if you are only printing with one filament?
would that make the left the main hotend? the one with the thermister?

I don't own a workbench but each hotend should have its own thermistor, are you seeing that is not the case??
this is a dual hotend setup - so the thermister is only on one , while I see the hole for a thermister on the other hotend,
is has only the temp wires going to it - no thermister.
i've never had a dual setup, but was very surprised to see only one. That's why I wonder if I got the clog issue because I was using the non-thermister hotend and turning off the thermister hotend because I was only running one filament line.
No instructions as to a primary and secondary from the solidoodle
Do me a favor and follow that one thermistor cable to the motherboard. Where does it go? Is it split into two cables and going to 2 separate locations? Pics would help. That just seems wrong but it also sounds pretty Solidoodley.

The thought of removing the wiring harness is unpleasant. since the board is different from my other printers, not sure I'd recognize the pin for the thermistor. But it does seem very strange since the thermistor reads back to repetier to control the temp. And since I've turned off the hotend with the thermister and used only the other hotend, that hotend should never have be able to maintain the proper temp. On my robo3d printer, the thermistor broke and the temp was all over the place. That's how I knew it broke
You don't need to take anything out of the harness--SD probably labeled the plugs to the board as sometning like "ET" for extruder temp
Each of the extruders has a thermister (there are 2 thermisters) held onto the nozzle with kapton tape. There has to be 2 thermisters because repetier can measure both extruder temperatures. Be very careful with taking on/off the fan, the thermister wire runs right by where the screw is for the fan. You may be able to reuse the kapton if you take it off (very) very carefully, but likely you will need new kapton if you remove the thermister. The black tubing also holds the thermister in place for each extruder.
The black stuff is not regular heat shrink tubing that I have seen. It is similar to an innertube with a cloth lining. There are 2 sizes; one is covering the nozzle and one is covering the entire extruder end (nozzle + heat block). Does anyone know what exact type of tubing this is or where to get it in case it needs replaced?

Ah, thanks! That helps to know what to look for... Yes, it looks like it is a "fire sleeve" ... amazon has some originally intended to cover engine wires that get super hot (spark plug wires).
I found some here by searching "heat sleeve fiberglass", though it looks like SD's price isn't bad unless you want a whole lot of extra:

I got on the phone to soildoodle -apologetic about the lack of response. They seem overwhelmed with questions, emails and problems. In my case, after talking to me, I do have 2 thermistors. The other was tucked behind the hotend, I could barely find the wires, but then followed them to the heaterbox but being behind and black wires, couldn't see. I discovered it after checking the motherboard and found both connectors had wires to them. Turns out, the hotend with the thermister I knew I had, was not connected properly. The thermistors for these hotend need to be taped to the nozzle, not the heaterbox like I'm used to seeing. But whomever attached it to the heaterbox used some type of black goo, which ruined the glass end. So soildoodle is sending me a new thermister. Also, they said their hotend can go to 240c just have to change the configure.h file.
So, I think my problems are solved. But won't know for sure until new thermister arrives.
I designed and have printed some supports so I can hang the black filament holds on the side of the machine instead of the back. If they hold my heavy rolls, I post them on thingiverse
