Topic: Install of New SD2/SD3 hotend in SD2?

Hello,

I purchased Solidoodle's replacement SD2/SD3 hotend and installed it into my SD2. It doesn't fit as nice as the original SD2 hotend, so I wanted to check in with the community before I heat the thing up.

The bulkiness of the new extruder design makes contact with my X-carriage (see attached hotend.jpg). I tried all angles of install and this was the only side that would fit due to the geometry of the new extruder. My question is, will this melt my X- carriage assembly? If so, and pro-tips on how to fix it?

Appreciate the help.

Jeff

You should be able to rotate it so it doesn't make contact.  It will melt the carriage as it is I have even seen those melt even when everything is perfect.  I would suggest your first prints be replacement carriages.
Good Luck

Thanks for the pro tips guys! I got it working.

I had to carefully re-route the wires so I could fit the shallower end of the extruder on the carriage side. Now I have 1/4"+ clearance. I've printed all day without issue.

I am printing those replacement parts today just in case (thanks for the pointers). Since Solidoodle doesn't appear to carry the replacement extruders anymore, I think I'll print up an E3D compatible extruder.
