Topic: Can't Home Y or Z axis

I'm new to the 3D printing world, but I'm a well established forum user on other topics.

Here is the issue:
-Y axis was binding, but the Z axis was working fine.
-Fixed Y axis after research and tinkering, then the Z axis got lost.
-Now the Y axis won't home and binds too.
-Z axis still has no idea where it is.

I tried doing 2 test prints during moments of correct usage but it printed the object on the edge of the print bed and then off the print bed.  Jammed and lost the Y axis calibration.  That happened both times.

I started from scratch to get the tension on the Y axis correct, but now it grinds and won't move at all.  The Z axis won't read and only moves in 1 direction, when it decides to respond.

I looked into the motherboard area and found one of the connections was almost fully unplugged.  After I plugged it in, I found no discernible improvement.

This is terribly disheartening and would appreciate any help or links to previous threads you guys are willing to send my way.

Thanks.

Re: Can't Home Y or Z axis

is it solidoodle press ? i had similar encounters. on the first print, one axis moved to the side opposite of the micro switch, when reached the end it start grinding. subsequent try same thing happen. seems like it don't know where home position is. don't know where the board and its connector are. i am stranded. left a message at the support site. still waiting for reply.

I posted a video on YouTube on how to autolevel the bed; Since I cannot post links yet, goto Youtube and search "Solidoodle Workbench - Z Axis AUTOLEVEL in Repetier"

What I found was the FIRST and FOREMOST thing that you have to do is PUSH DOWN THE SENSOR THAT IS BY THE EXTRUDER. It should go all the way down to the screw. When the printer moves in for a print, it will automatically push the sensor UP and begin the print.

Let us know if this helps!

Re: Can't Home Y or Z axis

What software are you using?  you need to have the home settings correctly set in the software and the machine must be homed before starting a print.
you also need to make sure the home switches are working . and it seems like binding problems are common on the Y axis .

Make sure the Z stop is working and the probe that hits it is not broken or missing.

Have you tried homing the axis one at a time ?
try homing the x then the y then the Z.
also can you show us a screen shot of the printer shape settings in RH or whatever program you are using.

Here is what my settings are for my sd4. in RH

Re: Can't Home Y or Z axis

Hey Guys!

Thank you for responding and helping with your info and questions.  Here is what the issue was:

They Y belt and bar was out of registration and kept binding preventing the motor to work correctly.  So I loosened everything and only pulled and pushed the left carige.  Not from both.  Then when I put the motor belt back on I barely put any pressure on the motor to create tention on that belt.  It was too tight.  Ding works great now.

The Z probe not working was because the physical probe was not over the physical print bed.  Once I could move the print head freely I could move the probe so it was over the print bed and homed it no problem.

The only catch is the Z probe has an up and down setting.  Make sure it's down!

Messing with the print bed values only shrinks the printing area and completely negates the point of having a HUGE printer like the Workbench.

Now I'm trying to figure out how to actually print without the 2 print heads knocking over the printing material.  Or letting the Z probe from tearing it up either as it drags across the surface of the print bed.  But that's another thread.

Thanks again guys.

Thank you for this info.  I'm checking it out now.  I agree with you so far in your video!
