Topic: Fliament unload causes the filament drive motor to click

My printer is a DaVinci 1.0 running firmware 1.0.3.

I am having concerns with unloading the filament. Goes like this:

1) Use the buttons and LCD to select unload;
2) Head begins to heat;
3) Filament motor drives - backwards I assume to pull the filament out;
4) Motor "clicks" slowly then faster in a series of bursts. Filament does not move except to shake a bit. LCD says to pull filament out;
5) By operating the filament release lever I can remove the filament but it takes more force than I would expect. I don't need to wrap it around my hand but it needs a pretty decent tug.

Is this normal?

Regards, Fred

I had similar the first time I changed the filament on mine.  Seems like the filament got stuck and would not get past the filament sensor.  Remove the extruder unit from the machine and ensure it is clean with no filament stuck.  I cleaned every last piece of filament out of mine then replaced, never had the issue since.

I ran into this and now just start with a Filament Load to get the head nice and hot. Seems like they need to fix the Unload code.

Re: Fliament unload causes the filament drive motor to click

Hi,
I am a Newbe when it comes to 3D printing. I am having a hard time loading the Filament into the printer. I finally got the filament to grab in the rollers. I don't undestand when the printer says to check the print head after it loads the filament. What am I looking for? So I can't tell if the filament is loaded correctly or not?

Any help to get me started will be appreciated,
John

You should see it start to ooze out of the nozzle.  It should look like a nice smooth line.

Re: Fliament unload causes the filament drive motor to click

Hi all,
My exact issue now is that the rollers grab the filiment. I never see anything coming out of the print head. If I try to print anything the filament comes out. But looks like it did not go through the print head but through a side hole. Because the filament is not melted. If I push the filament while loading I can make the filament come out of this same hold. So, any other suggestions? Do you think there is something wrong or should I keep trying to reload the filament?

Thank,
John

Re: Fliament unload causes the filament drive motor to click

Sounds like you are going to need to take your extruder apart. There may be old filament in it but broken off near the top of the throat. An area below the feeding gears. That would redirect your filament as you explain. They did test the units and usually just cut the filament off near the top of the head so you can see it and know it was tested. Its possible your exposed piece got broken off.

Printing since 2009 and still love it!

Just go on youtube and search for Da Vinci 1.0 head tear down, head removal, not feeding, the list can go on. Only heard of the issue, never investigated it.

Re: Fliament unload causes the filament drive motor to click

I found a video from XYZPrinting that shows how to clean/clear a Extuder clog. I will try that and see how it goes. I also bought the Tools pack from XYZ which includes a wire tool for cleaning out the nozzel. I am hoping that will fix the problem if not, on to Step 2 which looks like taking the head all the way off the printer.
