Topic: Printed blob

I don't have pictures right now, but does anyone know why the printer would all of a sudden print a big blob or plastic instead of a model?

I am fairly new to the printing and last night I tried a print and all it did was print a mess. I ran the print through slic3r and then loaded it to the printer. I have a DaVinci 1.0a model and I am using their filament. I have not had any other problems printing models that I have run through slic3r. This past weekend, I printed about 10 models through their for calibration and I got everything working the way I liked it so I thought I would try a new model from Thingiverse. My extruder is set at 220 and I was printing at .2.

I will try and upload some pictures tonight, but it was basically turned out to be a big pile of plastic. One thing I have noticed on some of my prints lately is that there are some burns marks on the plastic. Does that indicate that the ABS is not good? I have heard the XYZ ABS is not the best. I have a resetter, but I have not bought additional ABS to try yet.

Thanks for the help!

Re: Printed blob

Most thingiverse  models are not considered printable and in fact may have never been printed.  You first have to download them then run them through a repair service like nettfab cloud service.  It is a free service but will require a Microsoft account.

Re: Printed blob

I had heard that and had started running all of my files through their services.

I haven't tried printing anything yet, but will trying some tonight with another model that I have printed previously.

Re: Printed blob

The thing I have found about thingiverse is that most models have a makes section on their page. If the model has been printed by somebody they will often post a picture here to show their results. That is the first sign it is printable. The second sign is the creator actually printed one as well and shows it. The models that only show renders in most cases won't print without being repaired and some models just can't be printed due to overhangs. Keep in mind that thingiverse is more or less a 3D repository and not necessarily for 3D printing.

Re: Printed blob

Was the blob stuck to the bed? if my prints don't stick to the bed, I get a big blob of plastic also. once in a while I get burn marks as well, its usually caused by plastic that is stuck to the nozzle and comes off and sticks in the print. so clean your nozzle.

Re: Printed blob

Thanks for the information everyone. I think it had some to do with the model from thingiverse and the type I was trying to print. I used another model last night that was similar that others had printed and it worked better, but still had problem printing a ball. It was a ball and socket joint and the ball turned into a string mess.

Yes the blob was stuck to the bed initially and then as it printed more, it ended up coming off and was stuck to the nozzle. I cleaned it again and printed a different model and it worked fine. I'll have to work on designing my own model.

Thanks!
