I've been out of printing for about a year now. Forgot what this means. Anyone have any ideas?
Inconsistent extrusion. Does that E3D have a fan/shroud?
No. Its on a bulldog XL. Ill try and get a fan on it. That makes sense. Thanks!
Here is the finished print.. Doesn't seem to happen on smaller areas..
Yup that lack of a fan is (I'm guessing) softening the filament in the heatsink and the filament is bending leading to periods of no plastic entering the heatbreak/nozzle. Is that more or less right Tim?
With a fan the heatsink stays very cool. You can touch it even after 5-6 hour jobs (not that you should, I've measured it with a laser thermometer).
Definitely try the fan/shroud...you have the heatsink just hanging out there; even with the Bulldog fan & mount blowing some air over it, it is probably not enough.
Just out of curiosity, are you running ABS?

The mount you are using was the very first stacked plate design that 2n2r5 had tossed together. Shortly after I worked with him and a few others to come up with this simpler design. I also have a G-code fan duct that snaps in place under the motor behind the hot end that never made it onto thingiverse.

Rock on man! I was out of the game when you came up with that mount! Ill get that printed ASAP. Ill rig a fan on mine for now so it prints halfway decent.
That mount looks awesome! Try and get me the g-code fan duct as well!

That fan setup is genius! I actually think I have another one of those bulldog style blower fans. Or did you just use a standard fan?
It's the same style fan but that one is slightly smaller it measures 35mm.
I found it on Ebay but cant seem to find it anymore. I will keep looking and get you a link.
Edit: The seller was MYNEWFAN and it seems as though they don't list that model anymore. You may be able to contact them and see if they can get them. Model info:35mm 7mm New Blower Fan 12V DC 1.0FM CPU Computer Cooling Fluid Brg 2 wire 486A*

I can't think of any reason your extra fan from RRD wouldn't work other than that isn't why you have an extra fan
I'll modify it to get mine to work. I think I bought mine off digikey. RRD wanted $50 shipping for their replacement fan. : O!!!!
Ill let you know what I come up with.
It won't need any modification even if it is much bigger. Just as long as the outlet is lined up with the duct it'll be just fine.

I did just turn my Vref down to where it skips if I hold the filament firmly by hand. I think I had it up way to high causing my extruder and gearbox to overheat to the point it would melt plastic around the feed gear. : P...
Ill report back in 3.5 hours when my carriage is done...... Fingers Crossed.
Well, It still isnt going well. Found out my gearbox to mount bolts on my Bulldog XL were loose. Tightened those up. My heat problem is gone after I turned down the vref. My carriage is getting pretty loose. Going to try and get it to hold temporarily and print a new one or wardjr says he can print me one! Such a nice guy!
I also think my e3d alighment is off just enough to add slight resistance to the filament flow.
going to take it a apart again tonight for the 1000th time and see what I discover! : )

Definitely check that! I also found that too much tension to the idler on my XL was causing the drive gear to cut into the filament giving me a sawtooth effect prior to entering the E3D. I backed the tension screws off a bit and got much better results.
Re aligned the holes. Nice and smooth..... But my problem still occurs.
Going to disassemble the bulldog and see if I have a stripped gear or something unusual.
Going to rever back to my stock setup while I troubleshoot this and see if it still occurs.
I tried feeding some bridge through it and it just kept jamming between the bulldog and the hotend... Very unusual....

I do not have one and have never needed one. I use the threaded 1.75mm adapter that came with it.

You definitely need to use the PTFE tube with a E3Dv6. The instructions are clear about this.
The PTFE tubing should run from inside the heat break and as far into the XL just up to the hobbed drive gear...do you even have the tubing into the heat break? If not, that would be the cause of your inconsistent extruding.
what type filament are you using in these pics? its barely sticking each layers like layer height steps are way to high. almost looks like just spooling off extruder and no comprestion on any layers
